1260 Paint Peeling From The Engine Casing; Rather Surprising Tbh!

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by TonyMNo1, Jul 17, 2020.

  1. Cleaning up the Mutli earlier today after two recent rides putting circa 500+ miles on the bike, I noticed on the engine casing just beside the camshaft cover front vent, that the paint had started to come away from the casting, on an area roughly 3cm x 3cm, so far.
I haven't experienced this to date, with my 2010 MTS or indeed the 2015 plate Pikes Peak, so I'm quite disappointed to see this developing defect to be honest.
I haven't, as yet, been in contact with the dealership to ask them to have a look at it, to see what to do under warranty, but clearly this could become quite an issue with the bike, going forward.

I would have thought that by now, after so many issues with paint quality on previous models, Ducati would have got this categorically dealt with, so that this problem was banished, but then again......:poop::eyes:

  2. Hmmm, I'll keep an eye on that with mine. Have you got a photo of the damage? Has yours been through winter?

  4. I've always had my bikes treated annually with ACF50 and yes I do ride in winter occasionally, but don't think this will have anything to do with paint deterioration such as this. To me it comes down to poor paint quality and application/preparation.
Whatever, I'll be in touch with Riders in the near future to assess the implications and resolution.
So, watch this space, oh and a photo attached for information. Not the greatest of shots, but I think it shows the defect adequately. 1260 Engine casing RHS front.JPG

  5. Be very interested to hear what Riders say. Please post it here. Even if it is the expected F off - they all do that and we keep kicking ourselves in forgetting to mention it to customers of new Ducatis!

  6. Yes indeed they do seem to, but they shouldn’t. A few of my riding mates have BMW R1200GS and of them, two have had issues with paint lifting on the engine casings. They took the issues to the dealer who sold them the bikes for inspection. A couple of weeks later, they had phone calls from the dealer who asked them to bring their bikes in. They were given BMW R1200RT as loan bikes and told that BMWs solution was to fit both bikes with brand new motors. Apparently it is easier and cheaper for BMW to replace the engines and to have the old motors sent back to the factory. That surely is why many people choose to ride BMWs.

  8. My old 999 is constantly peeling engine paint, there can't be much left, I assumed they all do it.

  9. I will indeed:upyeah:

  10. Every Ducati that I've had this century has done it to some degree.

  11. Mine doesn’t. (998S / SFs)

  12. Haha, we are all truly and utterly besotted with our chosen manufacturer to put up with such shoddy production values/standards for decades....
'...They all do that...' = not good enough!!!
