Haven’t heard much about any of the 1000 bmw motors going pop. It’s nothing that worries me: gearboxes seem weak on every bike these days too
Well, again, for example id always heard "never put a QS on an old ducati/ds motor" so i did....when ducati john had the engine split he commented that after 12k the gearbox was in perfect condition and i know some of the previous owners had tracked it.......i use the QS very sparingly though...
If you’re bothered about power, there’s not huge amounts in it the bmw makes peak power to the red line, the gsxr makes a touch more bottom end. If you like top end, a map and bell mouths (couple of hundred £ for these) will see the gsxr with the same top end as the bmw for me I’d always rather have bottom end and mid range over top end. I’ve never seen a club racer that properly utilises the top end and most of us would benefit more from better bottom end or mid range despite what we may think
Popped over to completely motor bikes for a sit and a chat. The s1000rr is tall but not any taller than old 848 etc, the Big Bang r1 just looks plain old and bulky so that’s out! And the gixer is tiny! I suspect it may fit me perfectly for track, but a little bunched even for my 5’8 (long body short legs tho) if I did any distance. Did have a sit in a 1200c monster. Liked that. A lot. The tracer is too tall, KTM way too tall! So both out... They have a gen 3, 2016 plate with 8k miles for 10500 or so, and a 17 plate gixer with under 4k miles for about a grand more
I'm 5'10" and shortish leg 31". I found the GSXR comfortable on the road for a sportsbike and could do a tank range without needing a stop.
I bought one last year for track use and absolutely love it. And the 1200s monster is a great bike as well
The m1200s is a little scruffy in parts, 15k miles but nice full terms system, but looks priced as that when I checked eBay etc. They have a black RR which is nice but not sure...I love the motorsport colour on a beemer. Both come out, as priced, at 18k which is 2-3 over budget, so unless a deal could be done...may give the, a call tomorrow before I stick the starship on eBay. Btw they said it was services with belts and valve checked before they sold it only 3 weeks ago - guy didn’t like it so they took back for something else - Is Tim doing their seeding do you know?
I've seen a couple of brand new GSX-R1000R's advertised for around £13k. Having owned a K6 GSX-R1000 and a Gen 2 S1000RR from new, I'd buy the cheaper bike today.
How did the k6 and the gen 2 compare? I loved my k6 but always struggled to ride fast, so much power thru a ham fisted right grip...
It says something for the K6, that it wasn't until 2009 that the other Jap litre bikes caught up. But the Gen 2 S1000RR was better every where, except for bottom end grunt. I had them both for a while, got used to the BMW, and then nearly binned the Suzuki when I tried to ride it at the same pace.
Ha ha, I can relate to this. I did the same thing when I jumped off my V4S and back onto the 1098R. I tried riding the 1098 same pace and very nearly did myself a mischief. Note to self- remember your talent levels. The electronics are making you better than you are.....
