Hello, i am considering a bike purchase from Italy and wondered what to look out for in terms of documentation etc? eg - in uk you would get a V5, what about in Italy? As i have very little inclination of flying over or driving there - i will rely on the shipping company etc. However, for those that have purchased before - how did you get about with documentation, paying (its a dealer but assume bank transfer) or did you pay half? Finally - the shipping - how long does it take and is it safe etc yada yada. Thanks!
Haven’t done it myself, but have a word with @Dirty Leeds about the transport. Apply for an import pack too: https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/registering-an-imported-vehicle
Why not fly there (when all of the pandemic sh1t is over) buy it (if pukka) and then ride it home? When in the UK, fit a UK headlight and register it here. I've never done it myself but for a current production bike, I don't think that there are any gotchas.
Headlights have been the same for nearly 20 years so depends how old the bike is Don't fall into the VAT trap - under 6000 kms on the clock and you pay 20% n matter how old the bike is
Thanks, but bike is pretty rare so would not want to do a mad dash on it to come back - a nice planned trip yes but otherwise not looking to add miles unnecessarily. Would you pay full price to someone in Italy? In terms of VAT - this is what gov website says - either - not and. is this an issue? Bike has less than 500 miles but more than 10 years old. If i need to pay VAt - then will need to reconsider. If you imported the vehicle from the EU VAT is usually only charged on vehicles that are new. A vehicle is new if either: it’s been driven less than 6,000km (about 3,728 miles) it’s been in use for no more than 6 months
They dip centrally now and have no bias to one side or the other, for nearly 20 years, not this way or this way but this way
Absolutely positive about that? I can'y try now because a) I'm banned and b) neither of my bikes is roadworthy. My recollection is that on my ST2 and ST3 that dip cuts to the right but not left so road signs (particularly on the motorway) are clear. Mind you, this is on a 1999 and 2006 bike.
Hi Perry, it is true that lots of motorcycle mfrs made their dipped beam shapes are flat rather than flared. Just been out to check the shape of the dipped beam pattern on my 2004, french origin ST3 - it's flat not flared. Dave.
Hi there, I buy lots of vehicles in France, Spain, Germany and the UK and they all have similar reg docs so I would suspect Italy follows the same general pattern. This might help to understand what procedures the italian bike will have gone through : https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/vehicles/registration/formalities/italy/index_en.htm
My wife is Italian and if a used vehicle changes hand a Notario, a kind of document lawyer has to be consulted to transfer ownership.
That's like Spain, it's not difficult it just adds to your costs. Just makes me wonder if the OP really needs to buy his DUKE from Italy if he can't get out there - seems fraught with trouble to me.
That's all really good info - and i guess that extra cost is going to be factored into the VAT calc. Unfortunately if i could buy it in UK, i would. Saw similar bike in UK for sale once or twice but higher mileage at the time and pondered for a bit too long and it was gone. But looking at the VAT - it makes it quite a bit more expensive. hmmm...
Cheers, unbelievable but tonight been asked if I can collect in Italy on Friday deliver to Pinner in London by Saturday....if it’s northern Italy possibly but it looks very unlikely as I’m in Spain next week so very very unlikely...it’s a couple of radiators for a machine so a time critical collection ....can’t believe the timing as I could have a good do if if I had more time to build routes
Not saying you are wrong but I will experiment in the garage. (MyST2 is the oldest with the battery in and on charge. It's on its centre stand on my bike stand and so easy to check) If I am right then you will not hear the end of it. If I am wrong, then you will hear nothing.
What’s your ST2 got to do with it, there hasn’t been a left or right bias for years, it’s on the CofC even
