Despite the alluring thread title, this is a serious question. For whatever reason (sizing I guess) helmet manufacturers seem reluctant to publish the weight of their helmets. So I thought, if we can, lets weigh ours and post up to assist the quest for a lighter lid (lighter is better, right?). Please include the make, model and size plus the all important weight in grams to include visor and pinlock if fitted. I have three currently:- Arai Chaser X Size M weighing in at 1665g HJC FG-ST size M weighing in at 1520g X-lite 803 Ultra carbon Size S weighing in at 1294g The X-lite is much more comfortable on long journeys as less strain on my neck muscles, which got me thinking about the subject.
Pretty much all have them on the back of the lid these days. I haven’t tried my new carbon one yet...but compared to my modular one (which is one of the lightest) it’s feather like
X-Lite make some of the lightest helmets on the market. The current Sharp database isn’t up to date but the 802R has a 4 star rating and I don’t see the 803 being less. Carole’s 802RR (S) is stickered at 1180g, my X-Spirit III (XL) is stickered at 1450g and my Neotech II is stickered at an horrendous 1750g but Shoei seem to persevere with a multi fibre construction which will always be heavier. I currently use a LS2 Vertex carbon at 1400g. Previous helmets were a Laser Monaco Carbon and a Lazer Monaco Evo Carbon both at 1350g. Bear in mind these are all flip up helmets. Unfortunately the Evo was somewhat short lived due to a minor off. These lightweight helmets are much kinder to your neck and shoulders after a 300+ mile day.
I just bought an open face carbon for off road/ on road, made by Hebo. With the peak in place it weighs just under 950g. My Nexx X1.R carbon weighes 1230 grms inc visor. Both size S. Its terrible. My neck muscles are really suffering as they're not getting the workout that others helmets provide...
i have the agv gt voloce sm which weighs in at 1300g. when i bought it , it was described as carbon comp but loo.ing at the specs online now its down as fibreglass? weird.. especially as they have the (insert letter i dont have)5 down as carbon comp but it weighs 1380g.. what gives? anyhu the veloce is really light and i love it. will need new soon so might go with an xlite
I've got an Arai RX7 V and an xlite 803 ultra carbon (I also have an AGV open faced helmet but I'm not counting that one here) I think the Arai is approximately 1610g and the Xlite is 1290g. The Xlite is a really light and comfortable helmet but I do have problems snapping in the chin strap popper, and that's a real pia.
Ref the chinstrap. Its a royal PIA. I find it easier if I rotate the excess strap that is pushed on with my thumb by 90 degrees to the front as opposed to parallel to the chinstrap. It gets easier over time.
I've got a X spirit 3 that apparently is 1350 grams, it's way lighter than my old X Spirit 2 that i still use(Kiyo rep) and i have a Shark evo one-two that is unbelievably noisey and ways about 2 tonnes, fucking hate it, only used it when on my Indian that i have now sold so you can guess where the shark will go!
X-Lite 802R = 1,280g (M) Arai RX7V = 1,620 +/- 50g (M) Arai RX7GP = 1,560 +/- 50g (M) Prefer the X-Lite on the track. Light, quiet. Prefer the Arais on the road, better side visibility, better venting.
i thought the x-lite was supposed to have the larger visor aperture? obviously not. i no the agv has better peripheral than the arai which is why i changed brands originally, now i prefer the agv altogether over the arai
daily is an HJC "Lordship" in large (1350g) for around 12 years now to help with neck problems, hardly anything was that light back then as carbon was almost seen as a misnomer for a crash hat back then.
Shoei GT Air 1525g with visor and flip down sun visor. Nexx R1 Carbon 1310g with visor. Despite being heavier the Shoei is less tiring as it is much quieter.
My Xlite 803 UC definitely has a wider visor aperture. I've tried them on back to back and my peripheral vision is way better with the Xlite
My Schuberth C3 Pro is 1665g. It's noticeably heavier than my previous C3 Pro which was the size smaller. To the point that I'm considering trying a neck brace to see if it will bear some of the weight.
thats good news as its a real contender for my next lid. @Not Carl Fogarty recently bought one and i li.ed it alot. surprisingly though, he has a smaller head than me so it wasnt the best fit.
