Your Opinion On Poss Purchase Pls..

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by NOODS X, Aug 8, 2020.

  1. Hi..
I’ve liked this 748R for such a long time and keep thinking about £uying it?
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264819049672

Would like your honest opinion on it if poss please..

As you are likely aware I’ve had a bad runs with luck of late and can’t cope with more bad news, eg ripped off and burnt fingers..

I’ve read some bad things about the shop? And I’m a bit worried that it says the clock was changed at about 7k miles! Would have expected more accuracy there..

Should I ask JHP about the bike ( engine) etc..

Lots of the right kind of goodies on it but £17K ????

    many thanks

    NOODS x

  2. Hmmm.
Depends what you want to do with it.
Track it? Too much money for what it is IMHO. Buy a more modern and capable bike for half the price and enjoy.

    Ornament/investment?
It’s been on sale there a long time with presumably no takers suggesting it is either/both overpriced and/or a very (very) limited market.

    Make Road Legal?
Just buy a 748r that already is.

Ultimately it’s a question if will it make me happy? If yes, go get it. If you are already worried about it maybe it’s not the right one.

Bloody lovely thing though. I often look at it myself.

  3. I would tread carefully Noods. I would want to speak to the previous owner and people that had done the work rather than a salesman telling you "There isn't much you can do to this incredible machine to make it better" etc. Seems a big premium over a standard 748R and just because carbon BST may have been £6k at time of purchase, they can now be had for a couple of grand new and those are used. Advert wouldn't fill me with confidence

Just my opinion, not being overly familiar with this level of spec on a 748. Others with more knowledge may differ.

  4. ExPJ.. thanks mte.. it would be for road use..
it’s if you bought all those items and put on a 748R it would cost a lot of wonga yes?

I got pics of the stamps on fairings from them..

  5. Thanks mte good words appreciated. ... X

  6. Seems like an odd choice of livery to me. It's not a 'replica' as Bayliss never raced that bike/class so, for me, it has no more 'value' than a plain one...

  7. Hi NOODS, first of all please let me say that I only have experience with the ST range - ST2 then ST3 - so please take what I'm about to say with a big bag of salt, OK?

A quick Ebay search shows me that this bike is at the very top of what the market price would seem to be - the average price for a more basic-looking 748R with similar mileage would seem to be about £9-10,000.

So for a premium priced bike I would want it's history to be precise, specific and beyond reproach. This bike seems to have doubts about it's miles travelled history, so for me that is a black mark. Also there is a lot of talk about expensive parts being added, but nothing about basic servicing ???? Black mark.

It's it is road-legal, why are they only offering a daytime MOT.

The extra race parts on the bike sound lustingly lovely but are you happy to spend perhaps £7000 extra for them ?

I fully expect you will tell me I'm talking out of my arse, but I've had lots of bikes over the years and one (and possibly the only) thing I know is, loads of extras are, generally speaking to the average purchaser, not worth much at all and can even put off a future buyer.

So, come the day when you feel like moving her on, what 'genuine' market value is she going to have ?

    Best of luck

    Dave

  8. It would cost a lot for that spec but, this is a race bike that they are saying is / will be road legal.
You don’t tend to get value of parts fitted when selling.
As for road legal and daytime mot. I know little about this but surely you need brake lights and indicators on a bike of this age? That means a bodged brake light or worse, cut the panel. So, just get a nice road legal one. Mark 1 £8-£10k. Mark 2 £10-13k. Job jobbed. Then, if the desire takes you, you can make it yours.

Good luck in what you decide.
    @cookster re mot and 748r

  9. Following on from the incorrect MOT advice I gave last night...
For daytime MOT there is no need for a brake light or indicators.
When I had one for my trackbike I was told if I put any lights or reflector on it then he would fail it. Just a horn.

  10. I did not see your post last night but, live and learn. Daytime mot is a no no for me regardless. Puts too many people off IMHO.

  12. Yes, I did ask and it’s only stickers so, but do agree with you there.. X

  13. Noodles I can see the appeal, why not buy a 748 and tart it up yourself to your spec and that you know why you have done it.

I’m not sure, my gut instinct says no.

You have the talent to make up a beautiful bike of your own :)
