How Heavy Is Your Helmet?

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Expat Jack, Aug 4, 2020.

  1. I would have bought the same as EL T if I knew and tried to get a rear spoiler if I felt I needed it. Shame you can't get the colour you want.

Edit: The big rear wing has a lower fixing point, although it might clip in at the top of non RS lid, I can't see the lower fixing point on the images availab. It is still possible to remove the big wing on the RS and covert it to the other layout.

Detlev Louis / Louis have some online offers on various lids. Watch the currency conversion to Euro when paying..

  3. The Pista GP RR is actually 1450g according to AGV although it feels really light ...... ( that’s what it says on box )

  4. that must be including the packaging dude as their website says 1280 unless the visor weighs 170g... i guess it may.. seems alot.

  5. Think your right ! Check website AGV came back with 1350, which says corsa is the same and I’m sure when we’re at OYB John thought the Pista was less than the corsa. Which would make sense

  6. To the Op's question....ive had the extremes of both...and never noticed the difference between one (heavy) lid and the next (Uber light) so ive never ever factored weight in as a consideration...protection all the way....currently use a simpson

And a shoei x-spirit 3 but ive had a carbon fibre simpson and couldnt tell the difference between any of them...

  7. scorpion exo-1400 air carbon at 1280grms.

  8. Shoei Neotec 2 TC3 including integrated Sena SRL comms
    Size : Large
    1850 grams

  9. Interesting thread. I was thinking on buying the Shoei X-Spirit III, but you’ve discovered to me the X-Lite X-803 RS and I like it a lot.

Which one would you recommend to me? I currently have the HJC RPHA-10, which I find really light. Is it worth paying almost 200€ more for the Shoei?

  10. A lighter helmet potentialy has a significant effect on injuries sustained in an accident. As i understand it the crippling injuries are caused by rotational forces, twisting your neck either around the axis of your spine or fore and aft. A 400+g weight difference between the lightest and heaviest, multiplied by the distance between the pivot point (about the third or fourth vetebra in you neck) and the centre of gravity of your head would amount to a lot of additional force experienced at the pivot point. Subject to quality of construction, I would always choose the lightest helmet.

  11. During an arse end encounter with a BMW last autumn, my C4 vertebrae broke and T12 was shattered. At impact, head, legs and arms snapped back, I then hit the road 50' further on head and left shoulder first. The performance of the Bell M5X helmet during the whole sequence of impact and then hitting the ground was remarkable. It weighs around 1.2-1.3kg with the visor. I would never go for a helmet over 1.4kg again as the neck rotation backwards at impact would not have just pinged a spinous process off C4. Shame the T12 got smashed to feck however

  12. If I was going to worry about what injuries might happen with any helmet on then I would eliminate the risk and give up my bike. The most dangerous thing one can do in biking is go out for a ride.

  13. I don`t worry about injuries when I go for a ride but as a helmet is compulsory then why not get the one that does the best job ? All things being equal a light, quiet helmet is less tiring and more comfortable to use than a heavy & noisy one. If less weight also means rotational forces are reduced then it is hard for me to justify not buying a light helmet.

Each to his/her own of course.

    1300grammes.

    Makes for less tiring trips.
I do wonder if there is a safety advantage too. Less energy stored due to less weight.

edit. Looks like this has been mentioned..

  15. I'll stick wit the Schuberth C3 Pro with Sena 10U integrated intercom. It is good for a 12 hour riding day and the aerodynamic forces on motorways far exceed any weight worries.

  16. So far resisted the urge to resort to childish euphemisms... oh damn!!

  18. Interesting thread!

Can't say this is something I've ever thought about too much. I've always considered myself as having an 'Arai-shaped head' and my current Chaser says 1580 ± 50g. Digging out the kitchen scales, it weighs 1598g including visor and bugs!

Which seems a lot by current standards.

  19. I have Chaser X and rarely wear it now. X Lite every time.
