Ktm 1290 Super Adventure S

  1. As part of my mission to go round and round in circles, a mate came round yesterday and reckoned I should definitely go for the Moto Guzzi rather that the more expensive (but better) Ducati Multistrada. So I re-looked and went sideways to the KTM.

    I would probably buy new from Fowlers in Bristol.

    Anyone got/had one? The looks are a bit challenging!

  2. Not got one but ridden a few. Awesome things. Much better than my Skyhook Multistrada. My next bike will be a Super Duke GT. Would have had the Adv S if they hadn't come out with it.

    P.S. You don't notice the looks while you're riding it.
     
  3. I’ve got one, its bloody brilliant. I had the GT before which was great but the SAS is so much more fun. The grunt is bloody addictive.
    How many do Fowlers have, I heard that UK stock was low at the moment.

  4. Dunno, but I won't be buying until a)things get a bit more normal b)I get my licence reinstated by DVLA and c) I get my insurance money.

    The general response is positive. I was interested to see if anyone came back and said, "yeah, I had one and it was total sh1t!"

    My first moped and so my first ever bike was a KTM about 52 years ago. So, I have got an emotional link going on here.

    Fowlers are pretty close and I used to go there often to mouch about the bikes and they had a nice coffee bar! Dunno what they have got new but they have three used ones in stock. The prices seem quite fair whereas the new prices can be a bit tasty - although I've gone from looking at the Super Duke to the Super Adventure S which seems more reasonably priced. I'm tempted to go for one of the cheaper used ones first and run that for a few years. Then, if I get on well with it, buy a new one.

    And it has sh1t-lods of power!
     
  5. Understatement of the year! That looks like its been hit with the ugly stick for weeks... Surely theres a different colour scheme or model that looks more like a bike should?

  7. The more recent ones aren't too ugly, pretty good by all accounts, one of the guys on last years Dolomites tour had one and he was more than happy with it. Went well too.

  9. Never mind the power, feel the torque! The LC8 engine is one of the marvels of our time. 80% of max torque (that's 103x0.8 = 82lbft) at just 2500rpm. They leave huge gaps at traffic lights with hardly any effort. The new version (2019) Super Duke GT is slightly more of a sports bike feel in the handling AND has more power too (pricey though - I guess the new colour dash display was an excuse to charge more) but is still comfortable enough for touring (even more so than my 2015 Super Adventure).

    I see AMS KTM in Tewkesbury have a 2019 Adv S for £12,499 (new old stock) and a 2020 one for £13,199. I'd heard that KTM had knocked a couple of grand off (new) older models.
     
  10. Sorry Perry I really don’t mean to upset you but this is one of those situations that I marvel about. All the people and collective intelligence that actually went along and approved the design of this thing.

    I’m sure it rides well but with a little effort they could have made it look so much more appealing.

    Ah well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. Ford Scorpio anybody?

  11. This is one of the things that puts me off the marque. Sure remaining stock of older models tend to get marked down by dealers and even importers. However, with KTM it seems to be an annual factory policy. Not particularly encouraging for people buying new to have their bike further, and officially, devalued after 12 months of ownership.

    Possibly they don't care as most owners are buying on PCP deals?

    Maybe this happens at a factory level for most manufacturers, if it does they're certainly more discreet about it.

  12. New bike retail prices are artificially inflated to justify the monthly PCP payments.

  14. Probably, many times. But before I wasn't so hooked on the KTM Super Adventure - more so the Ducati or Guzzi.

    But now I seem to have slipped over the border into Austria - and located where the factory is and thought, "that looks an interesting trip!" - as you do!

    My conclusion is (today) to go for KTM (either the Duke or Super Adventure) but used, not new, unless there was significant discount going on. The prices for used KTMs at Fowlers - who aren't noted for discounts - seems not too bad but new is ridiculous. Dunno if they discount the new KTMs once they know that you are serious.

    So, I would part ex one of my Ducatis but keep the other. Then I will have a Ducati and a KTM. Mr Europe, me! With an Italian and an Austrian!!!

    Although the KTM has been thrashed with the ugly stick, technically, it is quite advanced.

    Slight problem discovered by my physio is that I can't actually get on a bike. So, whatever happens about my driving licence, I'm going to be on to my solicitor to push for even more compo if this is going to be an enduring thing! My physio hate bikes and so she's not going to be very sympathetic to helping me overcome this hurdle. But it affects my cycling and so I'll go that way with that and ask for more help! If I'm lucky, I may get her handling my inner thigh!
     
  15. When I get mobile, I will visit AMS. AMS are about the same distance away as Fowlers of Bristol and so I would be happy to deal with them. I'll look at new and secondhand stock and see what's about.

    The KTM engine is quite appealing as it creates maximum torque quite low down.
     
  16. MotoCorsa in Wiltshire do Guzzi and KTM, as well as lots of exotica.

    When cafes open up, I hope to visit. It's bout 60 miles away from me.

  18. Motocorsa are great, nice showroom and even nicer cafe. They used to service my MV. Workshop is a few miles away, the other side of Shaftesbury in the village of Ashmore. However, they always lent me a decent courtesy bike, Tuono V4 1100 Factory on one occasion :D. A nice ride on local roads, lunch at the showroom cafe and then back to the workshop. That and the OK ride there and back (except getting around Bristol) made for a decent day out.
     
  19. Yeah, I think that I would rather buy from them than Fowlers, just because they seem to specialise in the more unusual. It's a bit of a trek for me but doable.
