Decent riding at Cadwell that! I waited until I could do consistent 1.50’s then went to the fast group to get dragged along, I’m down to 1.42’s after 3 days there. You’ve got half decent lines so you’ll soon pick up the extra pace and hold your own.
Was looking for the lightweight generator and found this https://www.fastbikesmag.com/2015/07/07/dans-ducati-blog-the-panigale-899-superleggera-cometh/. Assume this is the bike you were talking about @Phill748 ? Also found this on 899panigale.org - was an expensive mod as well at around £700 “No, none of the Panigale models have a magnesium generator cover, even the Superleggera. The lightweight generator kit drops 2.6 lbs. from stock.”
Cheers Joe - I’m back there on the 10th but pre booked in inters so i’ll see how things go - if I can get the full 7 sessions in this time then I think I’ll be ready to move up - just need to nail hairpin and barn as I’m embarrassingly bad on those corners!
Hard to gauge your speed but don’t look too bad mate. Took me a while to realise how much time you gain by braking a few metres later and getting on the power a little bit earlier, do a tenth at entry and exit of every corner and you gain 3 seconds and don’t feel top out of control. I still lose time on every corner exit as I’ll catch people on braking and then they pull away a bit on exit so I know I can get on the power a bit earlier. It’s all the hard balance of pushing more but not too much! Half your problem now will be doing a time with a clear lap so even if you don’t make a certain time but overtaken 6 bikes then that’s cost you a chunk, especially at Cadwell where you can get stuck behind someone for 3/4 corners before you get chance to go past!
I missed it off my mods list! I have flywheel envy now! Do you know if the parts are the same as the ones from 1199/1299? I’m thinking I could pick up used parts - research incoming!
Thanks for the tips - 1.42 is a great time - seems a whole world away when you sit and count 8 seconds! I took the time from the 2 videos and my best lap was a 1.50 - I think I did better in the final session as it was quiet but the battery had died on the camera so I can’t say. I’m going to try and improve my weak corners and focus on being smoother and calmer and try to put the time in until it comes naturally. You are so right about passing at Cadwell - I try not to overtake through Mountain to Barn because it’s so tight and I don’t want to put anyone off. I almost ran into the back of the R6 I was chasing at gooseneck - he was getting on the throttle quicker than me but through much of the circuit I was having to hold back - all good for learning though!
Lightweight generator - assume this isn’t the same as lightweight flywheel just another name for it? If so can’t you get it machined out a bit?
Looks like it’s a kit including the flywheel as well as the generator and cover, part number 96580051a Parts from the bigger bikes are definitely different but not sure if the flywheel in the kit is extra light like the one on the Panigale R
that’s the one mate, the 2.6lb is all off crank inertia. It’s a lot! From memory the side effects were reduced charging capacity but I can’t be sure, I just know it was available as an official accessory as stated. Yeah the guy who owned the bike is a member on here Ginge46 I think
If much of it comes from the flywheel, common in earlier Ducati’s, why not just get it lightened? And save £700!!
I’ve got an open pit there on Monday and hoping to crack the 39’s which should be doable. I’d do fast group next time if I were you, lack of hold ups will gain you a bit and provided you have a consistent line and are predictable the faster riders will come last easy enough. I noticed how much safer things go in the fast group, made me much more comfortable! Ive posted a few videos on the trackday thread but gives you an idea of lines, braking and acceleration. By no means perfect but I’m improving! Most of all keep enjoying it, it’s easy to say don’t chase a time but we all want to improve, just chip away rather than wanting to save 3 seconds in a single session.
Still researching! Found this: “More new stuff on the bike today: * DP lightweight generator kit - lost 2.6 lbs (.9 lbs. of spinning mass which is a lot!) --- The side cover was 1.7 lbs. lighter, and the flywheel was .9 lbs. lighter“
In which case the flywheel may give enough benefit maybe find a spare and have it machined and try it?
You probs need to mail them to check fitment but..... https://www.ducati-kaemna.com/super-leichtes-schwungrad-1199-1299-panigale-r.html
Some of us have fitted the 1199 stator and side cover and I went ahead with the 1299 slipper and covers as well, I think the stator was about 600 grams or something saved and I fitted Ti bolts to it as well. Makes It rev up quickly but you need to re gear because down low there is nothing, I nearly bought the TSS flywheel which is even lighter (same as an 1199R) but my engineer mate talked me out of it on such a small motor because of the benefits of a bit of flywheel weight.
