Hi all, I’m quite tempted to move my 996 on in order to get something with a bit more hp. I was at the Silverstone track day and whilst I could hold my own in corners what I would make up for there I would lose out pretty quickly on the longish straights. Silverstone is my local track so spend most of my track time there. I can’t stretch to V4 money but wondered what people would recommend going to as a bike for weekend fun and track days. Thinking 10/1198 or maybe an ex tri options 899 or alike? I do all servicing myself so no issues with belts, valves etc as well as suspension setup. Any help will be appreciated. thanks all, Mike
will be mixed opinions but 1198 would seem top of the list for me. Would it be a track orientated bike? - if so needs a Nova or similar 'box ideally..
I mainly ride on the road with around 6 or so track days a year. It’s likely I may end up doing some European days in the future.
I’ve thought of running separate bikes but with only a few days a year I’m not sure I could justify what little use a second bike would get.
I’m leaning toward an 1198. Seems to be some 1199s creeping in around similar money which makes the decision a difficult one.
Go 1199, if you can get an S even better, my trackday bikes went: 996 to 999R to 1199s, completely skipped the 1098/1198 generation as didn't see what I was getting for the potential step up and lots of chocolate engine horror stories abound. The 1199s has plenty of power, just enough electronics and is a joy to ride on circuit, for occasional road use I'm sure it would be fine but if you are doing more than occasional road miles it could be a pain, although its no worse than my 996 was for that I stuck over 50,000 miles on that ....
I used to own an 1199s, full Termi system and was a cracking bike. I moved it on as I would get an intermittent Engine! Light that wouldn’t hold a code and with my closest dealer at the time being 60 miles away it was a pain. Fortunately I now have a dealer about 3 miles away.
Any thoughts on this? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124324706877 spec seems ideal for my needs and could probably stretch to it budget wise?
Thats a 1299s, different level again, with the extras, ie the TTX etc, seems decent value, although beyond oil changes no mention of any servicing at all, would want to know whats been done then I'd bid him in the nuts for it. Also want to ensure its not a CAT bike, ad is very light on details beyond a load of inflated values for the extras.
My thoughts. Little alarm bell. I’m in dialogue with him and have asked about servicing and of the bike is HPI clear. He doesn’t have the original lights etc and I’m not a fan of daytime MOts. To me, if and when I come to sell in the future it just massively reduces your market.
Looking closer it seems to be fitted with the race body work kit from Ducati so has a taillight and headlight blank. New headlight and taillight and it’s back on the road (he has all the original fairings and tank). The gent owns a repair shop so they’ve done the servicing and paint on the new fairings. Seems a decent spec but probably needs to be closer to £10k?
