What Does A Category D Insurance Damaged Bike Say To You..

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by NOODS X, Aug 12, 2020.

  1. I have a feeling the cat D (and grey import thing) will stop being such a issue as time goes on.
Hoping the motorcyle investment thing crashes before they ban petrol engines, still have a few I'd love to own & ride.... just need a 50 % + adjustment in values

  2. Reminds me of BaronVonGrumble's S1000RR HP4. Can't find the video right now, but I think he bought it from his friend who crashed it on track and it was a Cat D.

He ended up getting a lot of bike for not a lot of money, fixed it up, but not back to perfection, so still had some scrapes. The point being like you said, he was able to just enjoy using it and not worry about it getting a scratch, stone chip, etc.

Edit: This might be the video:

  3. Is that the S4R you sold me?* If so, it’s a sound enough bike, although I’m presently struggling with a seized clutch, the repairing of which is being held up by 2 seized bolts - one on a spring post with a chewed hex head and another attaching the slave cylinder that has snapped two Allen keys in the past 24 hours! :triumph:

I’m more than happy to buy write offs so long as that is reflected in the price. I even once bought a basically brand new Bandit 600 for IIRC £500 or £800, which started life as a half faired model but fell off its side stand and one of the fairing/frame tabs snapped. The insurer deemed that as frame damage, and they wrote the bike off as IIRC Cat B (not to go back on the road). Some enterprising chap bought it as scrap, put twin Dominator headlights on it, got the DVLA to register it on a Q plate and then sold it to me for buttons. I was broke at the time and so absolutely made up to have scored myself a bike with not far off zero miles for less than a grand.

Buying a write off is probably not for everyone but if you’re careful and the price is right, why not?

    * Just to make clear - Dukesox was up front about the bike being Cat D and it was priced accordingly.

  4. Not the S4R, I stupidly didn't hpi that before buying it so I lost out. Not complaining, my fault and not a mistake I'll repeat. The bike I meant was a Honda cbr125 that Sally learnt and took her test on. We thought there was a strong chance she could drop it so it almost made sense to buy a bike that was already written off.
As it turns out she didn't even so much as scratch it.

  6. Talking of cheap bikes I need a 125 for my daughter to get some experience on before her test.
    Anything out there?
