Sound investment for two businesses severely lagging in the development of AV. I remember when Amazon floated at $438m in 97 (@ £18 a share), people said the same. The dot com crash amplified those sentiments. 21 years later the Amazon market cap is ~$900bn (citation). It wasn't until 2010, 13 years later that Amazon took off and in proved most people wrong. Those 97 $18 shares have now increased by 9500%.
I think the difference is Amazon already had a base business and branched from its roots. Uber is fighting legislation and lots of other things, and thats just its taxi business (TFL is an example, I am sure I read Italy and others are also basing them) thats before you start looking at the safety regs to allow cars to drive themselves. It’s a real tough one. Nothing he could have done but he wasn’t paying attention either. Imho bit like someone looking at the phone and the same happening. Nothing they could do but here are plenty of other things that could have happened at they simply were not paying attention
