1299 Panigale - Scorching On Engine Case & Head Gasket Question.

  1. Hi all,

    Whilst I had the side fairing off, I noticed this on the engine case, it's not too bad here but a little further back & up near the V, it's really black;

    As you can see, it's just below the head gasket. Could this be the coolant just spewing out & evaporating on the engine case? Also, does that look as though the head gasket (which I assume is the black line under the gold head) has gone?

  2. Is it running hotter than normal? Fan coming on earlier than usual?
    Does look a bit filthy that.

  3. that may be just a bit of oil weeping from the Rocker cover gasket, or you have some oil coming into the airbox and leaking down the head.
    if you know how, lift the tank to check inside the airbox for residue, to close out this aspect

  4. It was running hotter than before, prior to it going to the garage a couple weeks ago. Fan was coming on about 102/104.

    Haven't started it since the coolant went missing again though.

    @Nathanhu I will instruct the garage to do so, as it's going in on the 1st.

  5. rads on the early bikes suffered corrosion from blue coolant. possible bi metal corrosion.
    I removed rads and pressure tested them. They were riddled with tiny holes.
    Could you be getting coolant vapour blowing onto the head while riding and burning on?

  6. I had alot of gunky oil build up which oddly looked like burning coolant as per your photo. Mine was more noticeable on the camshaft covers but i can confirm the valve cover gasket had failed and was causing a leak. The burn look im guessing was the build up of dirt/grime and oil in that area. I cleaned everything up and have monitored since and there is no issues.
