why did you choose ducati ???

  1. Twenty years ago this month, June 1993, me and the missus were off to Turkey for our hols. It was something like a 4 hour flight so I bought the latest copy of "Bike" magazine to while away the time. Well, they had got their mitts on the M900 Monster and as soon as I saw it I told the wife, jokingly, that I'd just seen what I wanted for Christmas. Well bless my socks, she got a whopping big bonus from her work at the end of '93 and at the beginning of January '94 she took me up to the Ducati dealer in Newcastle and bought me one. It's been a great bike and I've still got it. Still got the wife too !

  3. I started watching bike racing when Foggy was in his pomp, then Bayliss, Hodgson, Toseland blatting around on the Testastretta-engined 999 which looked so cool in factory colours, and sounded awesome hammering out of bends.

I'd always assumed that a Ducati Superbike would be way out of reach, until I saw an immaculate 999s in black priced at £6,800 with only 1,800 miles on the clock. I suddenly realised it was achievable and as soon as I saw it in the flesh I just had to buy it .

6,000 miles later and I feel I'm still getting used to the masses of torque and the handling but loving every minute.

Apart from around town, when I (almost) hate it.

  4. Had a 996 poster on the bed room wall when I was about 11, always liked the look of them. I still have the Poster 20 years on. But my real love has been the 748. I had saved up for one but ended up buying a house. Got my 750ss, but will get an early 748 when I can afford one.

  6. When I were a lad, many years ago I did a paper round in the mornings before school. One house i delivered to had a 900 Mike Hailwood Replica that was always parked outside their living room window. It left an impression that I never forgot. So it was kinda inevitable that I would end up with a duke at some point. First one was an ST4s which we used to go to WDW2002 and once you've been to that you'll never escape .

  7. In the late 70's I'd had enough of Triumphs leaking and blowing up, fancied a black n gold 900SS, had a test ride on one but couldn't afford it so ended up buying a '74 750Sport. Loved that bike till I was knocked off it in 81. Injury and circumstances made me stop riding for a few years. Dabbled with a GPZ600R and a Yamaha SR600 then had a few more years off.
1997 saw me gagging for a bike, I tried to buy a damaged T160 Trident for about 6months, then a moody Triumph Hurricane copy with dodgy frame/engine numbers. A week after I swerved the Hurricane a 750 Paso with a rude 2:1 on it became mine. Since then I've had 2 907's, still got 1 along with my streetfightered SSie and '05 999 . My wardrobe is full of various Ducati shirts and jackets all s/h or last season sales, my bookcase has 30+ Ducati books and my house is like a shrine to the brand.

  9. That was a link I was never going to click on.

  10. Funky,

I'm with Glidd on this one. As much as the thought of that magnificent laytee who cooks, irons, *ahem*s, allows me my selfish indulgences with petrol and sport, I just couldn't bring myself to click the link.

but thank you for removing that potential distraction.

  13. For me it was owning something that I could feel part of, all my other bikes were good but to much for the road if im honest...6 points is not fun...and I always felt I needed to go faster. Sometimes when out riding i find myself talking to her, asking her to behave herself on certain occasions and just enjoy her company...she is my second wife!!!! The 749 might not be the fastest or the prettiest but she is mine, since ownership of a year I've done more mechanical work on her than any other bikes so I've got to know her very well. Yes she has her faults but I can call it character and one day she will be perfect, well she is perfect but a few more £s spent tidying her up and she will be a keeper in my eyes. Plus point noise, charm, different, neg points............um.

  14. It was suggested to me by a friend who doesn't even ride, in fact he hasn't even passed his test. Went to look at the 848, saw the Panigale whilst I was there.....fell for the Italian minx immediately. Nuff said.

  15. Could do with a man like that :)

  16. Take that back!!!

I passed my big boi bike test and my boss had been working for close to a year to get this monster of a machine to play nice. I didn't know anything about bikes and looked it up online. I learnt that it was a 750ss, read some reviews and he offered to sell it to me. Basically I took the first thing on offer and I'm now on a 749. I've ridden a few IL4's and 125cc's and scooters and nothing has even come close to the feel, the sound, the involvement of riding a Ducati.

And the cheeky torque helps quite a bit too. :upyeah:
