Semi Active Ohlins suspension

  1. No, I contacted FTR and cancelled mine. It should have been here last week and didn't turn up. I asked why to be told that Ohlins hadn't delivered any yet. I decided to P/X my bike today so there's no point getting one now!

  2. Not arrived yet

Contacted FTR told it would be another week now ...!

    Mmmmm....? Not brilliant service

  3. Interesting that it is only £250. When my SCU failed for 5k miles, leaving me stuck in Sport mode for 3 months last year, I was told that if I hadn't been covered under warranty, it would have cost me £800 for the new unit? Must be a Ducati 300% mark up thing?

  4. FTR have told me delivery this Friday...Guaranteed.
Pretty unhappy with FRT. I was originally told about £4-5 to ship, but then they took £11.95 shipping off me.
When I challenged that I was told “no I didn’t”, replied “would you like to hear a recording of the call?”, response “ok I’ll do it for £5 then but I’ll send it 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] class royal mail, so god only knows when you’ll get it”.
They billed my credit card on 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] May, also a very bad practice.
If it doesn’t arrive by the weekend I’m cancelling my order.

  5. Well FTR delivered via Parcelfarce this morning.
Small unit, well packaged. Simple plug n play.
Must disconnect the battery which will mean a switch back to MPH and turn on the ABS afterwards.
Double the range of adjustment isn't what I was expecting.
Instead of 1-17 you get 1-32, with the extra settings being softer...surely no one was complaining that the front end was too firm!!!

I'm about to fit and try it....I'll let you know how I get on.

  7. OK,
    Fitting was easy.
Disconnect (-) Neg on battery, 10mm spanner required.
Using two metric allen keys remove the cap screws holding the left hand seat cowl off.
Disconnect the suspension control unit plug, squeezing it to release the barbs, then man handle the old unit out of the rubber. A small amount of Silicon spay or hand soap to help ease in the new one.
    Refit battery Neg.
Swith on...Loads of whiring from the bikes suspension as the servos find the limits.
After 60 seconds switch off and reset the bikes units of measurement, clocks and switch DTC back on.
Why can't this be backed up in memory!!!! Note all your custom settings will also be gone.
You can switch between mph and kph, also temp. between F and C and what they call cons, which is your mileage and such.
What you do is, hold both the turn signal cancel button and the high beam flash button, then turn on the bikes ignition, after a few seconds the right hand display dhanges to units. Select and set Temp in C, speed in MPH and Mpg for consumption.
Currently looking for manual on how to set the time....Oh bollocks who cares...off out.
Now for the test ride...Heathrow to Brighton on the back roads, circa 70-80 miles should do it.
    Report back later.

  8. LOVE IT :tongue::biggrin: LOVE IT :tongue:LOVE IT :tongue::biggrin:LOVE IT :tongue::biggrin:LOVE IT :tongue::biggrin::biggrin:
    Ok...9 hour test ride.....
    I LOVE IT :tongue::biggrin:

  9. OK, you have to set each riding mode and passenger /luggage mode so that compression and rebond for front and back is at 1.
That takes about 12 minutes. After that you are laughing.
252 miles one sore arse...touring seat indeed!
Had a play around with rear pre-load...has anyone done a table with what they have set theirs to?

  10. Spill the beans. What does it do, why is it so good?

  11. yea air con...why so good...whats the main differences ?

    - questions specific for me (was thinking on the way to work today about it when riding) :

    - does the rear squat when accelerating hard still ?
    - does the front dive less when breaking ?
    - does it feel firmer or softer when riding ?
    - what does the display show now - how does it change the way to change modes - whats new ?

    bugs

    - questions specific for me (was thinking on the way to work today about it when riding) :

    - does the rear squat when accelerating hard still ?
Yes to start with, then it seems to firm up the harder you ride it.
    - does the front dive less when breaking ?
No, but then again I had just adjusted the pre-load to 7 complete turns on each leg, it was set to zero turns on n/s leg and over 10 on the o/s leg...don't ask me why I never knew i had to adjust it.
    - does it feel firmer or softer when riding ?
More planted. To be honest I tried it in all modes, but with the varying terrain on roads I don't know it was hard to tell the difference between them.
    - what does the display show now - how does it change the way to change modes - whats new ?
The only difference you'll notice on the display is the range is now 1-32 instead of 16/17.
If you want adaptive you must select the value 1 for rebound and compression on the front and rear. You can still preselect you pre-load on the rear as before. You must set this for each of the passenger and luggage combination and for each ride mode.

I did it for single rider in each ride mode, selecting a different pre-load for the rear.

To me the bike seems much better planted on the road and it only gave me a scare once.
Chasing after my brother (who knew the way) we came down a hill at a fair rate of knots, as you approach this small 4 way roundabout the road surface did an impression of a lunar landscape. With the high rate of pre-load and in sport mode the ABS went mad.

    I think it's £260.34p well spent.

The weird thing is you cannot set a minimum value...the system decides on the settings it's self.

  13. Well what a revelation, it has totally transformed the handling of the bike IMHO.
Without a doubt, the best £250 I have ever spent on a bike. Squat has virtually disappeared, dive is greatly reduced under braking and the suspension just "works".
If you have Ohlins, buy a box. Simples.

  14. I didn't go for the Ohlins suspension when I bought mine last August because I wasn't convinced it'd be hassle free nor whether it was worth the extra wedge but now I'm starting to wish I had done.

  15. Birthday present methinks!

  16. Seriously, do it!!

  17. Am just about to buy a Multi so was very interested to read about the SCU but Aircontech has made a very valid point above, would be interested to hear some feedback from someone in the know regarding the new SCU wearing out the servos, only time will tell I suspect

  18. Skyhook uses solenoids to control the damping valves. It's not electrostatic...that would make it "active" not "semi-active"
It is different to the Ohlins in that they use stepper motors to turn the adjusters, but in principle it's in the same park. Ohlins must be pretty confident the forks can handle the constant adjustment tbh, else they wouldn't launch the product. It is after all their product not an "A.N.Other" aftermarket bolt on.
I've not heard a bad word so far and it's early days but no problems either.
On the other hand, if you're happy with the stock set up then why change? Maybe try and get a ride on a bike fitted with the kit and go from there?

  19. The question I'd like to understand fully and hopefully someone can tell us. Is why does the Compression and Rebound need to be set to 1 on all 4 options and all 4 modes?
