Heading off fr a cheeky tour in a couple of weeks and cant work out how best to secure the bike overnight using a lock and chain. I want to actually lock to/through the frame rather than just through the wheel but i cant see anywhere that i can get a chain through. How are you guys locking up? Cheers
Pragmasis is great kit, I have their TORC ground anchor (x2) and chain (x2) but I wouldn't want to lug one of their heavier gauge chains on a road trip!
Got to agree with this - I have the Pragmasis anti-pinch pin for my 959 at home but with the 16mm chain and specific lock the weight would be quite something to lug around.
Im planning to take a chain, not as big as the one you guys mention and a disk lock. Im also looking at a mini D lock which has an alarm. Plan is to put the D lock round a frame part and through a chain link, then the chain round something static. Just need to check my chain links are big enough, which im doubting.
Something with an alarm is always your best bet - plus choose the places you stay carefully. I prefer to use private rural bed & breakfasts with off street parking where the bike can be out of sight. That coupled with an alarm lock that will at least alert you to nefarious activity is the best you can do while away from home. Things are so bad in the bigger cities though I just wouldn’t consider leaving a bike unattended, stories of the gangs taking them into the back of a van in broad daylight and surrounded by bystanders are enough for me not to risk it.
Yeah im staying in rural areas, avoiding cities. Better routes, less people, less Covid etc. Finding off street parking is hard work so far. Not something that seems to be catered for.
I use booking.com to help me search - find the area you want and then bring up the map view - choose your options to filter out the types of accommodation you don’t want and then use the pictures to find likely candidates. I then use google maps and streetview to take a look at the place and the local area and then contact the proprietor direct to ensure they are ok with me hiding the bike out of the way. Last year I rode to the Silverstone Ducati day and stayed over in a little village the night before - lovely little converted stables with the bike parked just outside the window and invisible from the road. Slept soundly knowing the bike was nearby and in the unlikely event there was an issue the disk-lock alarm would wake me up.
Haha ive literally been doing exactly the same. Written off most hotels. Trouble is theyre not all open right now anyway so the choice is already limited.
On the last tour I did (NC500 last year) I had a Roadlok on the front and an Xena XX14 on the rear disc (plus a BikeTrac tracker). For most of the trip I wasn't too worried because of the isolated nature of our accommodation, but when staying in Newcastle, Inverness and Carlisle I made sure everything was secure.
