Monster 800 S2r Starting Issue

Discussion in 'Monster' started by obelix, Oct 13, 2020.

  1. No having too much luck lately, after my SS not starting now my wife's monster :sob:

The bike would not crank so I tested and changed the battery which I honestly though was the root cause. As you will see from the video, I do have healthy cranking after the needle sweep sequence but still not firing. I also checked for sparks from both plugs and both are ok.

Could it be fuel not getting there ? any easy way to find out?

Thanks in advance for the help!

  2. Worth checking that the black key surround is properly screwed down as if not I think that prevents the bike from starting.

  3. Can I just ask ......and yes I know its a dumb question but ......... is there any fuel in it ...? I say this because I ran right out of fuel once on mine because the fuel light did not come on. And what I noticed was I was getting the flashing indicator thing you are getting ....(or very similar) ...

What had happened was my fuel sensor had failed (broken wire) and the flashing indicators were tying to tell me it could not trust its fuel level sender signal.

    cheers

  4. can you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key (before hitting starter)

  5. Hi ....

I just did some checking .........just to confirm ... my right indicator flashed 12 times just like yours does when I switched off the ignition with a failed fuel level sensor ..... I was out of fuel but my low fuel level light was not on....

  6. Thanks guys !
Yes I forgot to mention that weird indicator sequence once your turn the bike off......only on the right hand side..

There is fuel in the tank...not sure how much though. I will double check the fuel pump priming . and try the WD40 squirt in the air intake to see if it fires up....

@ Gerr, where is the fuel level sensor located?

  7. It's inside the tank..... mounted with the pump.. Filter gubbins on the alli flange. You need to look at a manual to see the details...

  8. Has it been running before with the indicator fault code?.. If so... you could possibly ignore that for now.... my point was just don't assume there is fuel in the tank because your empty light is not on....

  9. The indicator fault code appeared when the bike stopped working...it was fine few months ago.
I had a look at the parts manual and the pump nor the sensor are referenced as such in there

  10. It is in the tank... Big hole in the underside of the tank where the whole assy fits if you're using the ducati parts manual it's under "fuel pump" not tank..... So I'm wondering now if that fault code can also be used for other faults.

  11. A bit of reading following this link revealed that one guy converted the flashing to binary code, hex and decimal thus coming up with 3072. A bit of Googling on OBD codes suggests that some manufacturers link P3072 to fuel pump issues.

  12. As I've said.... When mine flashed 12 times on switch off it was a wire broken off the the sender in the fuel tank.

  13. Thanks a lot guys.....I have not spend enough time yet troubleshooting but I can NOT hear any pump priming when ignition is on :( ....and I know I have got some fresh fuel from yesterday.
Next port of call is checking if I get 12v to the pump before I start taking the tank apart.

  14. Kill switch?

  15. So
No fuel pump and fuel sender failure.... Check for common and supplies at the tank connector?....

  16. Yes I think it is the fuel pump/sender......I am getting 12V up to the connector on the bike side but I am not hearing the pump priming.....I will me removing the pump and feeding 12v direct to confirm.

  17. Both common and 12v at the connector? not using the bike metalwork for the common?

  18. Side stand switch?
