Morning Whilst the winter sets in I'm looking at my options of servicing my 899 myself rather than the dealership. Now I've only owned the bike 2 months and aimed at servicing the bike next year at a ducati specialist. The bike sat for 3 years doing very little (roughly 50 miles) Oil and filter change & clutch and brake fluid obviously but what about the likes of the coolant and air filter and spark?? it fires no issues and had no issues with overheating. Is it worth doing?? Bikes cover 4500 miles 2014 registered - he missed 2018 service due to the fact it hadn't moved. What do we think?? Also best place to purchase servicing bits
Coolant is a 4 year item nowadays, assuming it’s pink in colour. The Agip can be a little hard to find but Motul Factory Line is a good equivalent. You can also pick an equivalent up from the likes of Halfords for instance. The colour denotes you have the right stuff. Air filter is an inspection item at 7500 miles and it’s worth giving the inlet tract out a good Hoover out while you’re in there. Tbh, I’d suggest a new filter at 7500 anyhow rather than a clean. Plugs are a 15k service item. For the most part they’ll do it as well. The front is a ball ache to get, so unless you’re wanting to kill time or are bored and the bike is running fine, then I’d leave them.
Thanks for that.... with that in mind I'll leave the spark plugs. Ill check the service book see what was covered it might be due a change then.
Thanks Nelly Ducati recommend this product... not cheap thought. Any ideas what's best to clean down the surface before refitting?? I think threebond do a cleaner aswell..
Nope.. Threebond isn't the cheapest, but it works and works well. No need for a cleaner tbh. Bit of patience with some scotchbrite and a blade. Brake cleaner is good for final finish and degreasing.
Thanks for all your tips ...LOL!! Any tips before I go ahead and remove the casing ?? Does the heat exchanger have to come off and if so what should I expect? You don’t happen to live near leicestershire do you
Heat exchanger can stay in place. Be patient removing the casing. The sealant holds it tight, so don't go levering too hard in one place else you can break the casting. Leicestershire is a big place.. I'm in north Notts though.
http://cornerspeed.co.uk/ This is Nellys day job, founder, chief tech and all round good guy as @Expat Jack has mentioned at Cornerspeed ..... a proper gent and a wizard with the spanners ...... he has tightened my nuts a few times ...
Wow.. I feel blessed speaking with the founder... a world of knowledge - I'll bear that in mind and thanks for your handy tips. I may end up giving you a visit, I'm in Ashby so not a million miles away. Thanks Nelly
Nelly shame you don’t have a YouTube page on ‘how to do it properly’ can imagine it being a well watched page
Chezz I thought I’d take a quick glance at what I’m up against and it looks like a hell of a job just getting the plastic trims off
Hi Nelly - clutch casings off just awaiting delivery of the sealant. Remove the locating pins and green o ring ready. Any tips regarding the sealant and getting it back on?? thanks
Sorry Nelly for this ... covers off but noticed the centre clog inside the casing is quite chewed up!! Is this normal ??
