1098 Plastic Timing Belt Tensioners - Replace With Metal?

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Rustynutz, Oct 26, 2020.

  1. I have a 2007 1098s and am in the process of changing the timing belts. The existing tensioner pulleys are plastic. I remember reading somewhere that there were some issues with plastic pulleys on early bikes, I've tried searching on here but cant find anything on it.

Did Ducati replace these with metal pulleys after, should I replace them on my bike?

  2. I have heard and seen similar stories of plastic belt pulleys failing , I even have a track buddy of mine who's 848 pulleys came apart and destroyed the engine. His bike had over 20k miles on it but if I were you I would just replace them with the metal pulleys.

  3. I have just got a price of 370 from Ducati for 4 pulleys! Crazy price, I have sourced some from a low mileage engine for a fraction of this so all good

  4. Use new bearings. Might be a C3 suffix

  5. Sorry, I dont follow, what's C3 suffix?

  6. It's a designation at the end of the beating number to denote extra clearance in the bearing assy, for higher speed running.

  7. Ok, thanks
