Hi. 2002 st4s. Removed clutch slave cylinder (aftermarket type, few years old, but not an Oberon) in order to change front sprocket. Re-fitted slave cylinder with o-ring to keep crap out & without disconnecting anything etc. Clutch now not working. tried bleeding and there was a little air but not much - still no resistance at all at the lever. Trying to bleed it but nothing much coming out - as in squeeze the lever a little, crack open the nipple at the slave and squeeze fully, get about 2 inches of fluid in the clear tube and that`s it. Close the nipple, try again but no more fluid comes through and lever has no resistance. Poked around a bit inside the slave cylinder and you can push the piston back fairly easily until it gets to the spring. pump lever and you can feel the piston moving out, bolt it up again and tried bleeding but nothing - same 2 inches of fluid in the pipe but can`t seem to push any more through ? Is the slave cylinder knackered, or am i just doing it wrong ?... was working fine
Did you disconnect the slave cylinder from the pipe connecting it with the master cylinder or just unit it from its position on the crankcase?
Can you bleed up at the master cylinder?.... Exactly same happened on the multi when I unmounted the slave whilst changing sprocket and chain.... Bleeding up on the master sorted it for me.....
If the fluid in the reservoir has dropped they are a bugger to bleed, you'll need to tip the bike over to gdt air out of the top
not tried that yet - was a bit worried in case the damn stuff went everywhere or that once seal was broke on the copper washers - it wouldnt seal again without changing the washers - i think i will have to try it though, sort of convinced myself slave was shot as i couldnt pump fluid through it properly when bleeding
When I couldn’t bleed my 2002 ST4s Clutch it turned out to be the master cylinder, rebuilt that and it bled easily
Try bleeding from master cylinder BUT pull the lever back very slowly. It might take 20-30 slow gentle pulls before you get some feel of pressure buildup, once you feel it then carry on as normal.
I had this a number of times. I could only get the clutch back working by fitting the aftermarket slave then fitting the clutch plate. Not sure why maybe the aftermarket slave is the issue
all sorted. was air trapped at Master cylinder. Cracked banjo off a few times whilst pumping lever - sorted in 10 minutes. Thank you
