999 Just Picked Up A 999s, Calling Her Valentina!

  1. Today this big boy arrived! Direct from Moto Electrical. Just missing the Exact Start leads that should be on their way.

Its about 2cm longer than the OEM regulator/rectifier so might have an issue or two fitting it because of proximity to the radiator hoses but, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

  2. Anyone have any experience with the Moto Electrical MOSFET? Been looking to replace my stock VR with one and that one looks pretty nice! Does the function match the form?

  3. I finally did it....I got one!!! I've lusted after a bike lift for the past 10 years, can't wait to do something (anything) with the bike this weekend :)

  4. Nice tidy space nice lift and a cheeky bin too :)

  5. With the spare battery box I figured a way of shoeing in the MOSFET R/R. It shouldn't foul the fairing as there's a gap between the radiator and the fairing, hoping its enough to clear.

Wiring loom is a bit of a mess and came across an interesting discovery:

    IMG_7656.JPG

The plug for the vertical cylinder has the locking bit broken off....its got an orange rubber seal which stops it coming loose but I'm not 100% sure I trust it:

None of the loom is modular so to replace that plug, its a whole new loom....

Reckon its worth getting a replacement wiring loom....?

  6. A jewellers flat blade screwdriver should allow you to release the retaining peg.

  7. End of week update ana coil plug is still on its way over. Tried jewlers flat blade screwdriver and no joy. Bought a set of pin removal keys and they work a charm!

Managed to finally fit the Exact start cables. Apparently the terminals on mine had already been modified from OEM (Exige reckons its because the originals might have snapped off) so fitting was a nightmare as they're designed to go over OEM terminals. With a bit of manoeuvring and a spacer between the battery terminals and the leads to compensate the height difference, they're finally on!

Starting is definitely better, not a big difference in time (because of compression ratio etc) but it feels stronger.

Voltage on charging (engine running) Lithium battery with the new MOSFET R/R is 14.8v. Is that within spec?

Charging voltage hooked up to Optimate (800mA) and engine off is 14.3v.

  8. Few carbon goodies fitted :)

Matte carbon for the belt covers and varnished for the clutch. IMG_7668.JPG IMG_7667.JPG IMG_7669.JPG

  9. Very nice.
I thought about about getting the cf belt covers but the only bit you see when the fairing's on is the top bit of the vertical belt cover.
And the main point of cf bling is the visual impact (weight saving here is negligible?).

  10. Damnit. Now you made me want to swap mine for matte carbon also. Looks much better than the gloss carbon IMO. Great choice!

  11. Gloss is period correct. Just choose mate :)

  12. Can't justify the cost of swapping mine out for gloss for now. Like the look though.

  13. Plug turned up but, unfortunately not exactly the same thing. OEM on the right and replacement on the left:

Tried putting OEM pins into the new housing but they're too long. Yes I could strip the original pins to use the replacement housing but its not exactly the same type of housing. Seems like it should be female and the replacement is male.

  14. Just checked my spare loom, the new part does not have the shroud like the original. It is a 3 way female that is required. Have you test fitted it to the coil? Just try it without assembly. If it fits and the locking mechanism works then you can use it. The orange silicone seal will prevent water ingress.

  15. I can try the plug but, in order to use it I'll have to change the pins as well as the OEM ones are too long for the new shroud.

Searching eBay for 999/749 coil plugs I always come across images this like one that suggest there is a wiring sub-assembly for the coil but in the case of my 999, it just goes into the main loom:

  16. The coils were changed on later bikes to include a fly lead instead of the loom plugging straight into the coil.

  17. I wonder....

Are the plugs on the business end of the fly lead the same as the early 999 plugs? :)
