Recommend Me A Used Motocross Bike Please

  1. One thing I learnt from owning a KTM300EXC and using it to commute to Euston from Surrey is that these things are insane. I'dve been better off with a 125cc. I swapped it for a boring DRZ400 because the thing nearly killed me, it broke both my wrists twice. The 2nd time after only 1 week out of plaster. I underestimated them.

  3. Yes, well the new 2T KTM's are and they don't have a kickstart.

@Zhed46 have a look at enduro news bikes for sale.

  4. KTM and Husky 2T’s have been using the TPI (Transfer Port Injection) system since 2018. The original models had a kick start but thats been removed on the latest model, you can buy a kick start kit but the kick start is only used if the battery is dead, if the battery is dead the ecu wont do what its supposed to.

  5. Thats so true Fin. The bike was 100x better than me and frankly I was stupid to think I could use it to commute in that London. I sold the DRZ soon too as it was too dull. But it did leave me with an increased appreciation of Motocross/Enduro people and their fitness levels and skills. Of which I have none.

  7. Sorry everyone. @finm @evoarrow @the.dunnster @DucatiScud @Advikaz @cookster @Drinky @broke

I haven't been ignoring you and your really helpful replies. For some reason the forum doesn't always give me all the notifications it should do (@El Toro ?) and it was only by chance that I only happened to notice there were loads of further replies in the thread.

To clarify the MX/enduro issue. I am looking for bikes for green-laning and similar activities, but may also venture onto a MX track when I am satisfied we won't make tits of ourselves. I would prefer bikes with V5s, lights and side stands because though I have a trailer we may take them on the road, though my last experience with knobbly tyres on damp tarmac resulted in me face-planting a kerbstone (thankfully wearing a full face lid at the time). I would prefer MX'ers for lightness and looks rather than enduro but I suppose a 2T crosser and a 4 stroke enduro might work.....

Tbh, this is all very new to me as I last rode MX bikes between ages 17 - 19 and back then I was a bit of a tearaway, the authorities were less proscriptive about stopping people having fun, there wasn't a camera every 100m and so I didn't take much notice of where and when you were allowed to ride (in fact, one of the bikes met its end by being crashed into a canal). Obviously, I can't take that approach now though, but it seems that any activity that isn't controlled, regulated and, ideally for The Man, chargeable, is verboten and while I live in the countryside, it's not remote countryside, there will be people around, so any advice on that issue would be helpful. Furthermore, judging by some of the comments in the village WhatsApp group, the local Karens are very anti-bike and in particular they automatically assume that anyone on a crosser is a hooligan who should be tasered by the police and handed an ASBO.

  11. Like someone mentioned earlier, an enduro is better on the road than a crosser and you won’t be embarrassed on a track with one either. I loved my 300 exc and done a lot of trail riding on it, a couple of enduros and a few LDT’s with no problems. But I wouldn’t go on a tour of Europe on one :)

  12. If you are looking at green laning then go for an enduro bike, it will be less of an issue when it comes to taxing and insuring, it will already be fitted with lights (not essential but if your out and fog comes down on an mx bike its dangerous for you and other road users) and it will have a side stand. MX bikes will be a little lighter but far more impractical. If your a novice then I suggest you book into a training day, there are loads of places across the country, have a crack on someone else's bikes before you put £5k into something you either hate are shit at or you hurt yourself.

  13. Mx bikes are set up stiffer than enduro as well (obvious statement I guess) but a bit like on short circuits, if you’re not in that operating window they lack feel and are less friendly.

    Different power delivery also :)

  14. I’ll likely start with green-laning and later on if I get a feel for it, look into MX.

I’ve searched for off-road taster/training days but a bit like trackdays, nowhere seems to be running any again until March. However, purely by coincidence, a guy I know who lives fairly locally and who I run into now and again at trackdays and ride outs etc last night posted some pics on Instagram of him green-laning last weekend so I might drop him a line and ask if I can tag along next time he goes out (providing I have scored myself a bike by then).

I’m thinking to try and find a road legal 125 2 stroke motocrosser then pass that onto my son and buy an enduro for myself so we can both go out. Alternatively, if I don’t take to off-roading, I can just give him the bike or sell it on. There’s no reason I won’t though, as I used to love it when I was a teenager......but then again I also used to love drinking snakebite and eating chip shop spring rolls when I was that age, yet when I tried both of those things again last year I almost threw up

  17. Deffo Katoom early 400 exc the best imo, as long as you keep up the regular oil change requirements.

  18. It’s a very kind offer, but it would probably cost me half that to get up to you near the Artic Circle and back down here again!
