The M4 Motorway around Newport is one of the four main road transport links between Wales and the rest of the UK. Mr Drakeford thinks that he can solve congestion at the Brynglas Tunnels by building new cyclepaths through Newport. Cyclepaths are a good thing, but you don’t see many 38 Tonners using them?
This pretty much sums up my experience of unions when I worked as a shipyard fitter in the early 90's.
I did a little work on this job and am familiar with some of the issues. Whilst Carwyn supported the scheme, he knew that Drakeford didn't for environmental reasons which is why he deferred, out of courtesy, the decision to Drakeford. The cost issue was a smokescreen and everybody involved with the scheme knew it. As far as the Cost Benefit analysis, it was a slam dunk in favour of the scheme. Drakeford's legacy won't be his handling of Covid19, rather the loss of Ineos and Britishvolt - harsh but that's politics. Both Labour in the Assembly and the Conservatives in Parliament have badly let down the Welsh people.
Agree with you re HS2, but if there is no political will from the W.A., any major infrastructure scheme is dead in the water.
Wales has been let down again by greedy capitalist, with no humanity no foresight and only interested in the fast buck.
There’s more industry than you are admitting to, plus you need to get your Amazon shipments down to Swansea for delivery to the punters.
As i said, all to be reduced soon, so the Brynglas Tunnel will and does except peak hours cope admirably with traffic flow plus it's a good speed checker.
“Peak Hours” starts at noon on a Friday and goes on till 21:00. The traffic slows into queues at The Coldra and is stop-start from the top of Christchurch Hill all the way to the tunnels. That’s a very “Socialist” version of Coping Admirably, which most people would describe as hell on wheels!
I can see from Carmarthenshire and that's far enough away and it's not fucking rubbish it's it's stone cold reality.
I know you look over the top of my roof, listen i have driven that route a lot not recently granted, at all times of day never ever came to a halt, i have seen a tailback right back towards Cardiff in the opposite direction nightmare.
Wales are fucked under the current lot. Lets face it, if the well dries up in England because of Brexit, Covid etc, the pot will be empty for Wales and Scotland (and NI). Maybe its about time they stood on their own two feet? Then Wales would be double fucked
Did I say I want to? Union is better together, but if Wales & co expect to take as much as they do now, they will be in for a shock. And clowns like the people running it right now are making it worse: they've essentially closed thousands of bars & restaurants and closed tourism, bug earner, for good in many respects. And now turning away (or discouraging) business development and not investing in infrastructure? Sheer madness. I like Wales, the place and the people, and would be happy living there. When I retire and don't need to work
Talking about the transport, the only funding for Welsh roads recently has come from the EU for the Heads of the Valleys. As far as rail links go, the electrification of the railways into Wales ended at Cardiff because the U.K. Government held the purse strings, so to get a train from Paddington to Swansea, they had to buy trains from Hitatchi that had diesel motors as well as electric! In London, Crossrail has gone up from £14 billions to almost £19 billions and so far, as well as being over budget, to date it has taken 3 years longer than projected, but there are regions in England with poor rail services around Manchester, Bradford and Leeds and no doubt other areas too, but the U.K. Government have decided that HS2 is far more important. Bozo Johnson talked about “reuniting Britain” but with the London centric Government it is all about the south east of England and the rest of the country are second class citizens and the split is wider than ever.
