BTW. i had my Monster on a Ducati stand that locates in the wheel spindle on the LHS. Then I could lock the rear wheel properly with a bar through the wheel. Any of this holding the rear wheel on the brake or having it in gear never worked for me.
I never marked the wheel but I guess that if you were worried, then you could always wrap the bar (I used a trolley jack handle) with rag. Or, you could just smash the bike up - although I don't recommend that as nearly two years later I still have to visit the local surgery every few days for bandaging. And they have put me on penicillin now!
Couldn’t get the rear to lock with a bar, not that I was happy doing. So took it off again, on side stand, in gear and sat on both using a short socket extension got the torque wrench to clock 183
I did this job in my garage with help of other person. first do not engage any gears do this in neutral only. No need to strain your gear box. Also you absolutely put the bike on its side stand. One person to hold rear and front brake and thats it. you can torque it down to 185Nm very easy.
Try on your own What I now know is if I add a short extension bar to the socket, 3 inch or so, I can lean over and do it while holding rear brake
I considered the clutch tool @Sev but was worried about putting undue load through the gearbox so concluded that if it worked by other means then I wouldn’t do it.
