Project 1099

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by mikecoops, Dec 11, 2018.

  1. So after having my 1098 written off the remaining finance on it was paid and I ended up with around 4k after buying it back. So not enough to get another one and i wasn't riding a massive amount at the time so decided to do what id wanted for while and shoe horn a 1098 lump and gubbins into a 999 frame as I've always been a fan of the shape.

I had managed to get a what i think is a 749 frame that was written off so i could mock up various bits while waiting for the right stuff to come up for the project. i later found out it was bent but still served its purpose and will become a table next year.

There's not many pictures of the early stages due to a smashed up phone but here's how she sits so far.

As you can see the exhaust is less than conventional but due to having to raise the subframe to clear the standard 1098 pipes the gap was bloody massive. I had a full system from a DL 1000 kicking around that was the perfect diameter to so a bit of chopping and trimming later it fits! some people will probably turn a nose up but i quite like the look. the cans needed cutting down anyway due to a split in the sleeve so i was able to repack them at the same time.

The other main issues I've come up against were airbox what a pain in the arse that was. again cutting trimming, mesh and fibre glass later it fits all be it very snug but it fits. A lot of similar projects e seen have taken the bottom of one air box and then mount the injectors in the inlets and then used either the tank or another top to seal it but I'm a bit out of practise so just hacked away a bit at a time. I also ended up trying 2 different tanks first was supposedly off a 999r but nor sure how to confirm this. obviously id rather have this one on there but with the 1098 air box there was no chance so i picked up an 848 one with pump nice and cheap.

Due to the frame shape the 1098 expansion bottle does not fit in the v where its meant to so i raided the parts bin and found one that sits nicely next to the rad and is slim enough the fairings still go on. I cut out some carbon to make a support and job a gooden.

The last bit of bodgery if you like is the front sub frame. Obviously the 1098 clocks are vastly different to the 999 ones but all that needed doing was a cut out to accommodate the plug and 2 plates to keep it on the rubber mounts. It fits nicely without getting hit by either bar or switches. As the bike will only get a day time mot i dident feel the need to get one of the ones that comes with a light and the race ones seem to be much cheaper.

The next thing on the list is a caliper rebuild the front ones bled lovely and nice feel from the lever but as i went to roll it off the ramp they were completely locked up. On further investigation only one of the 4 pistons on one caliper was moving so out they are coming to be cleaned and replaced if needed. Also to top it off i cant seem to get any sort of pressure in the rear caliper. That has been stripped cleaned and new seals put in but nothing so any suggestions would be nice.

  5. I have zero idea now you mention it looks like it's under un even pressure?

  6. yep

take a photo from behind the rear wheel with the bike upright..

  7. Imho, an optical illusion due to the top coil being flattened to bear evenly

  8. then again how many 1098 swing arms have you fitted in to a 999 998 748 frame?

  9. Is it because the mounting points are off? Looking at tue shock the spring isn't out of line but looks like the whole unit. Also has anyone got suggestions on the best place to get caliper pistons I think these have had it

  10. Actually, looking at it again, the spring doesn’t look straight.

  12. Great project, I'd love to build something by picking and choosing the parts I wanted to put on!

As brake components aren't available separately from Ducati, when I rebuilt my ST4s calipers I used Brembo parts supplied through KTM - you just have to work out which model uses the same calipers as the ones you want to rebuild. It looks like the 2008 RC8 uses the same calipers as yours, but you'd have to check to make sure.
I have used Bikers of Jersey before, https://www.bikersjersey.com/?year=2008&modeltype=403&model= 9903H0&schematic=C086901360

  14. wheres your picture..

  15. I forgot to take it when I was in the shed

  16. so the project has been going well and all started running well which I was happy with. Until I went to move house a couple of weeks ago. went out to start it up and the batter was toast. tried to charge it and nothing, luckily i know a guy at the local Halfords and he gave me a fresh one even though it was 6 months out of warrantee.

Problem is even with a fresh battery it wont fire. turns over nice and strong it coughs once or twice but doesn't fire up.

Looked at the immobiliser ring and that's all ok and in place. where would be good to start to try and get it going again?

  17. take the plugs out and dry them in a warm flame gas ring or summat...... make sure the battery is well charged, refit warm plugs and or warm the engine with a hot air or hair dryer......go again!

  18. If it coughs now and again it's got sparks, so not the immobiliser.

  19. will give that a go once I have the time to get tank and gubbins off
