So planning to change rear sprocket on 19 1260s to 42 teeth from OEM 40, looking for a bit of insight. Are OEM 525 or 530 Weight? Is it best to change all sprockets for new at same time? (Current set done 9k miles)
Curious as to why you want to change the rear sprocket. In my experience dropping 1 tooth on the front sprocket is more usual especially as you don’t have to worry about removing/adding links. My understanding is that the 1200/1200 DVT and 1260 share a 530. Andy
It’s 530 - and after 9K, I’d change chain & both sprockets. I did the same (42T rear) on my MY20 1260 S and I’m very happy with it.
Really ? I’m coming up to 40,000 miles on my 1200 and have only replaced my sprockets once. 4 chains, I admit but only 1 sprocket set. Andy
If you have the financial resource, there is a coherent argument for changing sprockets as a pair. In my experience however, in your instance, I would not necessarily be considering changing the sprocket you are keeping standard, after only 9000 miles. Andy
530. At 9k, Change both sprockets with a new chain, no ifs or buts here. That way you're starting fresh. BTW, the front sprocket is not that expensive anyway. FYI, I changed the rear sprocket and chain at the first 600 mile service. Having had two previous "long geared" Ducatis I decided it wasn’t worth the wait. 42T is one of the best mods you'll do.
Chain and sprockets changed at 16,000 miles. 42 teeth rear makes 6th gear more useable rather than just an overdrive for dual carriageways. It also helps with riding in town.
14t front isn’t the same as 42t rear. It’s more, about 10% from memory. I’ve done both, individually and at the same time. Together was too much. I’ve settled on 14t front, whilst it’s an absolute arse to fit, it’s less hassle in regards to the chain. My MTS is a weekend twisty road bike, so 14t suits it. If I was spending time on the autobahn (for example!) I’d go 42 or even standard. IMHO, there’s not a huge amount of difference between 14 & 42, but enough to notice.
Changed the front & rear with longer DiD Zvmx chain. Best thing I’ve done on the Mut for making round town use more of a pleasure than a pain. Easier to cruise at low speeds without the constant up/down 2nd/3rd etc. On the open road, at higher speed, 6th is part of the family! All round riding is more pleasurable. Can’t understand why they never came out of the factory like this. There is a link on forum somewhere to an Italian outlet which does a copy front sprocket, with or without rubber silencing ring, longer DiD gold chain & an Esjot st. steel 42 tooth rear. My mate has 1260 & wants me to do the same mod to his once the madness subsides!
The name of the firm in Italy which I believe you're thinking of is CarpiMoto. On this note , I was speaking (emails) with Carlo Carpi this last Friday about a replacement Rizoma mirror which I busted on my Monster during winter storage. Duh! I have purchased many items from him over the last several years. Awesome dude. Good communication, good prices and fast shipping. https://www.carpimoto.it/en-CA/Bike...60/50509_DU-1260S-2-DID-530ZVM-X-Chain-15.htm I think I can speak for everyone here that the 42T mod is one of the best improvement you can make to your Ducati. It just makes riding around town just that much more enjoyable. In Stop-n-Go traffic, you're not slipping the clutch as much. Moreover, you don't lose much if any top end speed as the Multi cant reach redline in 6th anyways. You're going just as fast but at a higher RPM. It's a Win-Win.
Thanks for the link to carpi Moto, I have been struggling to find a UK supplier, better still it is a full kit that they sell!
