1299 Selling Privately Or To Dealer

  1. Hi currently have a 2016 1299. just wondering what to do as its never getting used and cant see me putting any miles on it for the foreseeable future. It has full main dealer service history and only covered 3000 miles. Immaculate all round .all standard apart from akrapovic cans , rizoma foldible mirrors ,tail tidy and rear seat cowl. All origonal parts included cans, mirrors etc . All books, paperwork etc. Just seen prices seem to vary massively on the standard 1299 so looking for some advice. some finance outstanding which will obiously be cleared . Not in a rush to sell but also cant be arsed with chancers so the dealer option seems appealing , although i dont want to part ex as im not going to be out on a bike for a while

    Any advice appreciated

  3. You ask your local dealer to try and sell it for you for a commission. It’s worked well for me in the not too distant past. :)

  4. what kind of commision would that be my mate? i would probably want 10500, is that a fair price ?

Selling to a dealer you'll get trade in price, at the minute it'll be bottom book or a bit less since its winter, lockdown and you're not buying anything else off them that they will be making a profit on too. if you're realistic and aren't going to get hurt feelings being told the bike is worth a lot less than they're being advertised for on autotrader etc then its definitely the quickest and easiest way to go, instant sale and they will settle the finance.

    "sale or return" where the dealer sell it for a commission, you may get a little bit more than a straight trade sale but then you're still waiting potentially months for a return, all the while your bike is in their showroom.. what happens if it gets damaged, nicked, the place burns down, goes out of business etc? if you go down this route you want something a lot more solid than a verbal agreement that they sell the bike and you get some money.

    Private sale... I invariably go down this route because I want the best return on my money but the endless timewasters, dreamers, late night texters and "best price for cash innit bro?" types do get annoying. and still, as a private sale if you want to move it quickly then it needs to be priced accordingly.

  7. Don't sell to a dealer unless you want to get completely robbed. Especially this time of the year! It would be worth a punt sticking an add in the bikes for sale section on here. Detailed disruption and lots of pictures will help. I sold my last Ducati 959 from someone that visited the site, so it does work... hope that helps

  10. There is no harm trying to sell it privately now in the winter months, yea for sure you might not get top money for it at the present time. Saying that I’ve bought I think all my bikes in the winter months so there are always buyers out there especially if the bike they want appears.
    Make a real effort by taking some really good pictures from all angles and even some with the fairings removed to show the real clean condition of the bike. In the same ad list all the service and mot dates including mileage and details of the service garage. These are the real things that get people interested and fingers crossed the person looking for your bike sees your ad.
    Good luck with the ad and sale, just make your ad stand out and better than the rest advertising similar bikes.

  12. I paid £500 on a £18500 sale, leaving me with £18000 which I was more than happy with.

  13. I paid 500 on a 12,500 sale, happy as well.

    You might want to wait for the weather to cheer up a bit. Ducatis and snow, not normally two thoughts that combine well.

    Dealers like special bikes in the window and the consequent footfall.

    I don't like time-wasters and "will you take five grand for it mate?".
     
  14. Might be worth a try on we buy any bike etc. I put my Ford Ranger on we buy any car yesterday and they came back with a very impressive first offer.

    I only tried them so that I knew what I should be expecting on trade in but I'm not convinced the dealer will offer as much. If nothing else it gives me a bargaining tool with the dealer.

  15. I just sold my Thruxton to a Indy dealer. I pushed by saying that if I accepted £7400 for it I wanted him to buy it for stock rather than wait for it to sell and then give me £7400. It suited me as I could clear my loan etc and am immediately better off, however at the mo, I’d avoid main dealers, I don’t think their profit margins allow them to sit on used stock with the lockdowns etc. Also, if you hang fire until end Feb, I’m sure we will all know much more about the situation and also it’s bike buying season so you might get a few hundred more for it!
     
  16. For me i would do your homework with the current winter market values,but take onboard any factory extras,write a well rounded advert,add four to six good photographs and place it on this free web site.

  17. Careful with them. Some folk report no trouble, others say the haggling starts when you drop the car off for assessment

  18. Thanks. I don't think I will use them but as I said it does give me a good benchmark for negotiating with the main dealer.
    I know the main dealer would like it back as its immaculate with lots of nice extras and very low mileage.
     
  19. It seems really variable depending on who you talk to. Some say it was seamless, others that the lad inspecting the car started pointing out all sorts and offering way less than the original quote
     
  20. I've accepted less from the dealer for a seamless transaction otherwise I have to drive to get the vehicle inspected and I don't trust them not to start chipping me.
    WBAC were offering close to forecourt value which I don't think was ever going to materialise.
