1260 Cold Start Issue

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Pat Mills, Jan 23, 2021.

  1. So went out to the 1260s this morning, -2 C, full battery as on trickle charger but bike won't start..

turns over but then sounds like starter motor disengages or turns a few times then stops..

any ideas or anyone had similar issues that you fixed?

  2. When was the last time you started the bike ? Andy

  3. About 10 days ago when was +2

  4. Being on a trickle charger is no guarantee your battery will be fully charged. Depending on what sort of charger you have, you could have just hit it during the maintenance cycle or, if you have been unfortunate, the charger could have damaged your battery which is not uncommon. If you have a digital volt meter, measure the voltage at the battery terminals and see what the voltage drop is when you try and start the bike. The issue you describe is typical of a flat lead acid chemistry battery. If you don’t have a DVM, does the display dim or go totally when you try and start ? Again, a classic sign of a dead battery. 5. pretty new battery, optimate charger, no dip in lights or dash, will try checking battery output.

ironically 22 year old cbr600 just starts straight up.

  6. The battery reads 13volts
    Ignition on 12/13 volts
    Engine turnover 3 attempts
    10v
    10v
    9 volts

not sure what figures should be?

  8. Your battery is fubared, IIRC, it needs a minimum 11.4V but I’d expect 12V. Andy

  9. Jump it from the car and see.

  10. New battery ordered!
Got a mate to check his and it holds at 12v so think you pretty bang on at 11.4

  11. :upyeah: Andy

  12. I wish Ducati would fit proper batteries to these bikes. I hadn’t ridden my KTM 790R for about 6 weeks, it hasn’t been on charge, yet it fired straight up on Thursday.

  13. I just had this issue with my 7,000 mile 1260s

if you get a strong smell of petrol at the same time, chances are it’s the same thing, caused by a fueling issue when very cold.

Change to urban or touring mode and holding the throttle open FULLY, try starting it again. Holding the throttle open let’s more air in as the smell you get is due to it being over rich otherwise.

Try it … thank me later

  15. What is the factory battery in our 1260's, is it decent or a cheap unit ?
