Just asking for advice as usual, I have had a persistent problem with fuel wicking up under the lacquer around the tank filler cap. I took the surround off and there is a small rubber grommet that sits into the lower housing which was loose and a bit damaged, should there be a gasket under the main tank filler surround or just metal to paint? and where would i get a replacement grommet, what is it called? Going to wet and dry the peeled lacquer, mask and respray but concerned about why this is happening in the first place.any advice ?
I think the "grommet" you are referring to is what I call the chimney that is the breather for the gas tank. It mates with a tiny hole on the underside of the gas cap. If this vent was clogged you would end up with vacuum in the tank. You problem sounds like you have a clogged drainage line. Check underneath your tank to make sure the two drain lines are not kinked.
