Up sizing from 848 evo to 1198S. Is this the right decision????

  1. Had my 848 evo briefly and love it but just need something with a little bit more umph. Can get hold of a 1198S 2010 4000 miles for 11k. One owner, full exhaust sys etc. tbh not ridden one yet and been given mixed reviews.

as I said, I've only recently owned my first ducati as above but feel for a bigger version after coming from bikes in the 160-180 bhp bracket previously.

Is there any difference between the 1098 and 1198S apart from the obvious 100 cc?.

I know this isn't a dating site before you start but I'm 6ft and 15 stone if this makes any drastic difference in my choice..... Haha

gonna try and get down to my local this weekend (where the 1198S will be coming from) and see what they have for me to take out (the 1198S isn't due in for a few weeks).

Up to now: loving the V twin noise and low down grunt which makes me smile every time but I'm just after opinions on my update choice.....

    cheers in advance

    Az

  2. 1198 meant to be more refined and less aggressive than 1098. S either way: Ohlins worth the money.

Try one, the grunt is meant to be off the scale.

  3. I've had the 999S and 999R. The S was a great bike and the R was just sublime and I wish I could have kept it. I've now got a 'breathed on' 1098R and its potty. If I gas it from low speeds it invariably tries to loop me... even with a dollop of rear brake. The low down and mid range surge is furious. On track days I have to keep rolling off. Its definitely a bike requiring a more skilled pilot than me. But fuck it, that doesn't stop me loving its insane shove. Talk about laugh out loud in yer lid! Followed by 'whoa ye bastard, I wasn't ready' type stuff.

So... if its a bit of barking shove and low down grunt you're after then get the 1198S. You wont be dissapointed

  4. Do you really need more oomph or is it your testosterone kicking in?

I can ride my 848 EC much the same as I rode all my JIL4 litre bikes.

  5.
Oh come come now!! Of course we need more grunt, power, torque etc!!

You make a valid point but if I were to find a bike that matched my capabilities I'd be turning up to track days on a fizzy. And that'd be no fun at all would it??

  6. that would be a hoot

  7. Ahh.. The days of the Fizzy!! Wish I could wind back time...

  8. Coming from a gsxr1000 I do find the 1098's front wheel in the air more often and its not intentional! The power is much more readily available than the jap thousands to me. It did take me a while to convert though and did have some "what have I done" thoughts. I have not ridden an 848 or 1198 but can say the 1098 is tasty enough for a speed freak who enjoys the "shot out of a cannon" feeling. Probably the biggest difference between the Gsxr and the ducati has to be the corner handling for me. I was surprised how far over I have had the tyres without actually realising, just feel more confident with it.

  9. im actually realising the 1098 is a bit much on for the road.i know the throttle works both ways but you just cant help yourself. its 100% addictive, knee down, high speed, wheelies ,grunt ,everything you want......but you need to spend time setting it up.

  10. Me too, 4 of us on fizzy's off to disco's, gettin pissed and fingering a bird round the back with Dexys Midnight Runners booming out through the windows. Ahh young romance..... Great days.

  12. Cheers for the replys fellas. Looks like I'm gonna go with the 1198S. Can't wait to be honest just apprehensive on getting stung on running costs etc. What should I make sure has been done with a bike of 4000 miles? I've been told that a slipper clutch would make the bike handle a lot better and is a must. I'm not tracking the bike just road riding, for now..... Haha

What questions do I need to be asking the dealer abouts it's history. I massively apologise for what may seem a stupid question but just don't want to be stung after the sale....

    Cheers guys

  13. Services etc. I could just ask the dealer but that's just their pricing and as others have stated: not always the best nor competitive. The 848 was an impulse buy and going from R1's and gixxer 1000's, I feeli i need a litre capacity machine again!

  14. When I had my blade I thought I didn't need all the power so I've had a gsxr 750 and now the 848 but I do miss the extra grunt now. Makes me wonder what the 999 is like I've never rode one but I'm thinking it could be just right

  15. How's that then? And why's it "a must" if you're not tracking it?

You sound like a salesman's dream.

ps. I have some magic beans if you're interested. I'll do them at mates rates too :upyeah:

  16. Slipper clutch more essential on 1198 than a 848 ImO, way more torq on downshifting and even on the road likely rear locking easy enough into roundabout, especially if spirited.

ET have you tried an 1198?

  17. Yes I have, thanks for asking

But in my humble opinion, unless you are riding like a complete lunatic on the roads there's absolutely no way that you'd "need" a slipper clutch.

Don't get me wrong......it's a nice bit of kit to have, but "essential"? I don't think so, not for normal roads anyhow.

  18. Ain't no mug but thought this forum would help a newbie. Most seem helpful mate. As for the beans, ill take em anyway whilst I think of another to waste y

  19. I haven't, know I'd probably want one, eh ;-) but also know a 996 locks up the rear more when aggressive on the road than a 848 and a 1198 with 80odd lb ft even at low revs is going to be way more likely if you went say 5th to 2nd entering a roundabout

but tbh after now riding with a slipper, bit like Ohlins forks, I'm totally converted and see them as essential
