The small earth strap that is bolted at the back of the engine, where does the other end attach, mines just currently flapping about. Cheers.
From memory, I think it goes to the back of one of the footrest hanger bolts, though it’s not a great earth point, and I replaced the short lead with one in heavy gauge copper from the engine up to battery -ve to make sure it was a good earth.
Yes, I thought the only real place it could go is to a footpeg, just seemed a bit pointless. I have done exactly the same thing, run an earth straight to the battery, was just curious as to what it did and whether it was really needed.
Marginal I agree, but yes, it is possible over time with some corrosion at the engine-to-frame mounting points for the engine to become isolated from the -ve battery pole without this separate strap straight from the crankcase.
