Mot Fail If You Have Converted To Led

  1. Not knowing who VOSA were I looked it up. “VOSA was an executive agency, sponsored by the Department for Transport. It existed from 3 April 2003 to 31 March 2014. VOSA merged with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to create DVSA .”

    So it would seem the answer to my question is one, DVSA.
     
  2. deffo, but with their own regional centers, staffed by people with their own oppinions on the deffinition of "excesive"
    some aspects of an MOT are a clear PASS OR FAIL tho i would estimate that about 90% of an MOT is oppinion. and trust me on this, ask Mike Catto of Grampion Region what excessive is, if indeed you get a deffinitive answer it will no doubt differ from, MrRoberton of Highland Region as it will with Malcolm Brown of Argyll

  3. I hear what you say but cannot see where opinion fits “If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.”

    in reality I suspect the testers will do what they have always done viz switch on the ignition, operate the switches necessary to get light out of the indicators, headlamp, tail lamp etc as expected and you are good to go. Also bear in mind that this is generally carried out in broad daylight when any stray beams of light will go unnoticed.
     
  4. it was a just general point re MOT's. it's been a wee while since i last tested so i aint up to date on the special notices and changes to procedure or the equipment used to test headlight aim. i was aware of the rules around HID, but not LED. one of my lads use them in his Audi. Good Quality ones, with the style of headlights fitted, you cant tell what is in there by looking from the front, you re not allowed to remove anything during an MOT so you cant tell from looking behind the headlight, the Beam Pattern is perfect, and passes without advises. had i been testing it and Pulled up by VOSA For it, i would say, In my opinion, the headlight was not modified at time of test.
     
  5. If it's OEM it's OK that's the stupidity of it! Even tho they are safer brighter etc etc etc !
     
  6. It is all to do with homologation. Whether it the beam pattern is satisfactory or not has nothing to do with it :(

The stupidity of fitting LEDs into reflector headlights is that those reflectors were designed to have a beam pattern with a very precisely located light filament giving 360 degrees of light (halogen). People then fit LEDs that are not the same size nor the same location as the halogen filament was, and go around dazzling other road users and don't care.
    No OEM is just an LED bulb fitted into a halogen reflector.

  14. lamps are the name given to whole unit. a bulb does the illumination.
    if Hella call them bulbs, i'm cool with that.

  15. Well, when I did my electrician apprenticing I was taught they were carbon filament lamps, Fluorescent lamps sodium lamps etc. Just sayin

  19. Ah! OK. I think it’s an industry thing. When looking at the preventative maintenance of offices or factories and the like you would refer to the diarised replacement of fluorescent tubes as re-lamping.

    But I agree with you on vehicles they are bulbs.

  20. I spent a long time reading about lamps and bulbs yesterday. What a waste of life that was. To a point.

    Anyway, the way I see it, after my extensive Google 'research', it goes something like this:

    A filament, tube of gas or diode can be mounted in a shaped piece of glass making a 'lamp'. The shaped piece of glass that resembles a bulb is known as... Wait for it.... a bulb. The term 'light bulb' is synonymous with a filament lamp where the filament is mounted in a glass bulb.

    On vehicles it seems that you effectively have a 'lamp' mounted in a larger unit (known as a headlamp) and you need to use different words to ensure you know which part you're referring to I guess? Hence in vehicles they're bulbs?

    Interestingly the term 'headlight' refers to the light emitted by the headlamps.

    Yawn.
