Last year I managed to badly scrape the leading edge of one of the silencers on my Superlight. Not terrible and it still functions perfectly well but it's an eyesore to me I look at it especially it's over some of the factory stamping for emission info etc. It is the standard brushed aluminium and I don't see a way of actually repairing/fixing it. Since then I've tried to keep an eye out for a silencer (or pair) for sale but so far no luck. Plus any for sale will be around 25 years old, as my own bike is, there is a pretty decent chance that they will be marked in some way and the finish to me shows up scrapes and dings really easily. I've wondered therefore whether a silencer from another model will fit straight on ? I don't have access to any other model Ducati to compare mine with so this is where it gets tricky. I've measured my can as 400mm length and 350mm circumference. Has anyone swapped over the factory cans for ones off another model ?
I had yet another search of ebay and found what I thought might be exactly the same as mine: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Abgassch...676769?hash=item2180d9c761:g:1vgAAOSwrEJf40-h but the exhaust pipe that exits the silencer can and connects to the headers is way longer, it extends to just forward of the footrests, so is probably 400mm+ whereas this one for sale is maybe 300mm by the looks of it. Are there multiple variations for the SL/FE bikes? Mine is stamped 573.1.030.1A ZDM-A11 and is a 1996 bike.
I got a pretty good brushed aluminium look from scourer pads on a dremmel. This was at the end of a fair amount of prep with emery cloth etc. If you think yours are too damaged for that to work, or don't have the time & inclination, I'm sure you with find a local metalwork shop or engineering place will either be able to do it or know someone who can.
This thread shows how to get the sleeve off the silencer if you find a replacement. https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/split-sl-exhausts.80905/
Thanks, I guess thats an option- I had hoped that sourcing a replacement wouldn't be too hard but they're obviously rare and not cheap plus quite possibly suffering their own damage. Will keep looking and pondering my next actions.
The raised exhaust pipework to the can clearly differs from that on the 900ss, but does the alloy can itself? Is the can sleeve the same as the more easily sourced, common or garden 900ss version? If so, you could buy the plentiful version, drill, drill, rivet, rivet, job done innit. However, there will be those on here that will know whether I'm wishful thinking, or not.
I have these if you're interested, I've realised after so many years I'm never going to use them so they may as well go to some good use, both are unmarked (un-used?) R/H is PN:573.1.030.1A (ZDM A11) L/H is PN:574.1.030.1A (ZDM B11) PM me if you're interested.
