Hi Any recommendations on carbon fibre wheels 1199s I use it on the road, I was going to upgrade to a V4 but the 1199 is mental enough for me so I’m doing a few tweaks. Thanks.
after removing my wheels the other day to clean, ( 1199s) it still surprises me how light they are as standard. i would guess the rear tire is heavier than the wheel nowadays..! after running Carbon Dymags on my 999r there was a marked difference in handling and static weight. I always wanted a set of the CA5's just for the optics...
As Nathanhu says, OE wheels on an 1199S are pretty light. I put a set of BST's on my 1098R and couldn't tell the difference. If you're doing it with say a gixxer or ZX10 then yeah, you'll notice big time. Obvs it's all about the weight. Do your homework before you spunk 2k on a pair of CF wheels. Just like I didn't.
Thanks, I want too give it a look I was going to trade in for a V4 but I can’t make the transition from fast to f...... fast so I’m going to spend a few Bob on the old girl.
Wouldn’t bother as the weight difference is minimal considering your already running the forged wheels. I however did notice a small difference in handling swapping over too the slightly lighter OZ Gas’s wheels. Even a slightly reduced weight will have an effect on rotating mass at speed. Some manufacturers also shift the weight so it’s further inboard and not towards the out part of the wheel rim. But personally the jump isn’t worth the extra dollars....
But carbon wheels will be on another level of lightness! So should definitely be far more noticeable depends how deep your pockets are.... I see these as part investment as long as you remove and sell on for a decent price. Secondhand carbon wheels still commend a decent percentage of money if there still in great condition. I generally remove any aftermarket part that has good value and shifts quickly. All the top branded gear goes really quickly if priced reasonably......
Not in this case, the 1199S runs some of the lightest OE wheels available across the Pani range, the weight differential would be virtually unnoticeable on the road but evident on track, having done this mod with my 1199S thats what I discovered. They do look awesome though..
So are 1199s forged aluminium wheels lighter than the forged 1299s/V4s aluminium wheels?.... I do know my OZ gasses are slightly lighter front and rear to the OE V4s forged. Can’t remember the exact figures. I did do some research on the carbon wheels and they were again lighter still, by some margins compared to the OE forged items.
dont forget its not the over lightness of the wheel but where the weight is, oz gass have the rim machined to make the outer lighter.
1199s F Wheel = 6.8 lbs (w/ bearings, no rotors/spacers) 1199s R Wheel = 7.8 lbs 1199 Base F Wheel = 9.4 lbs (w/ bearings, no rotors/spacers) 1199 Base R Wheel = 12.2 lbs Difference F = -2.6 lbs Difference R = -4.4 lbs Approx. Wheel Weights BST 7 Spoke 'Mamba TEK' Front (17 x 3.5): 2.77 kg / 6.1 lbs BST 7 Spoke 'Mamba TEK' Rear (17 x 6.0): 2.74 kg / 6.04 lbs From my research when I was looking at wheel options ....
Also the new BST Rapidtek are a bit lighter than the previous generation. front 5.9lb Rear 5.2lb I bought those for my base model 1299. The rear wheel weighs less than the rear tyre. but as has been said it’s where the weight is as well as the reduction. CF wheels have a weight distribution biased towards the axle and not the rim. More weight on the rim is bad
My front TKCC wheel with bearings and wire reinforced rim; fnaar fnaar. Lighter than BST. My rear BST is 2.85kg with bearings and the rear tyre was 6kg (190/55 Michelin).
