1260 Timing Issue?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by iiiDutchiii, Feb 12, 2021.

  1. Hi guys. Just covered 14.5k miles on my 2018 Multistrada 1260s. Love everything about the bike. But yesterday a problem appeared where if I wind on the throttle say in 3rd around 40mph, when the throttle turn to around halfway point (I.e. not fully open) the engine ‘bogs down’. Feels like when it calls for sudden harder than normal acceleration it just coughs and splutters which is annoying when going for an overtake. If I throttle up the revs slowly it’s ok. But when I need to open her up a bit the engine isn’t happy! Does this sound like a fuelling or timing problem maybe?
Gonna give Moto Rapido in Winchester a call ASAP but wondered if anyone knows if this is a common fault?

  2. Do you have the original exhaust fitted ? Andy

  3. If you do, there is a valve in the exhaust, level with your right hand foot peg. Sounds like it's seized. Andy

  4. Hi Andy. Yes bike is completely standard. Nothing ever added or taken away

  5. A job for a mechanic or something I can check easy you think?

  6. Sounds knackered...... i,ll give you £3K for it and take it off your hand!!

Probably a siezed exhaust valve as others have suggested!

  7. What level are you running the traction control at?

  8. My apologies for leaving you hanging. I was in the Chinese takeaway when I replied and my meal got called so I’ve been with my girlfriend. It easy to tell if the valve is stuck and you could try and free it with lashings of WD40 and moving it back and forth until you get a full movement. Workshop at MR is closed tomorrow so you won’t be able to raise anyone until Monday. Push cones to shove, I’m in Tadley and am prepared to pop over as it looks like you are in Reading. Andy

  9. Hey Andy. Thanks for offer mate. I’m just down the road from you - on the bike everyday and be cool to catch up -my mechanical skill n understanding is literally nil!

  10. Hey Nelly. I use touring mode pretty much all the time so whatever the default of for that mode

  11. Removed the black exhaust cover. Is this the exhaust valve that might be stuck? It is minging with dirt! There’s a cable attached that looks ok I think.

  12. That looks well corroded, I think that would be a large part of your issue :) Clean all that up and lube it. You could do with the silencer off too so you can see if the valve is moving inside the exhaust.

  13. Mate that is minging. The valve should rotate. Lots of WD40 to start. Drop me a PM (touch my avatar and hit start conversation). Happy to pop over tomorrow. Andy

  14. That thing looks like it’s been at the bottom of the ocean for a while, like it was part of some old shipwreck.

  15. Once it’s free it will rotate when you turn the Ignition on.

Then once it’s free get one of the Healtech or DucEE plug ins and you will never have the problem again (no downside)

  16. An image like that could get you banned from the forum! Have you seen how clean some of the bikes are on here!? ;)

  17. Believe it or not I do wash it at least once a month. Used every day come rain or shine. Presently collecting a solid covering of road salt so probably time for a good rinse!

  18. From the looks of the awful state of the metalwork, it appears to be well and truly lacking in likely movement. I've seldom seen worse to be honest. That being the case, it will almost certainly be the reason for your throttle issues. Once you've sprayed the area liberally with WD40 or some other similar rust penetrating spray and left it to soak for a while, say 2-3 weeks (I am joking!), then attempted to ease the flap valve by hand, I would suggest after it moves freely, spraying it with ACF50 or such like. Then periodically checking the valve/spring action and re-spraying as suggested, should keep you on the move more smoothly.

If you don't with to adopt the HealTech or DucEE electronic gizmo approach, detach the valve mechanism and add a spring or two to the cable activator to replicate the spring action, which will also fool the system into thinking the flap valve remains fully functioning. This method has been well described in numerous posts on this forum, so you should be able to see what I'm talking about. Good luck with solving the problem.:upyeah:

  19. No joy! Cleaned up the valve and it moves freely. Rev the engine and it seems to open and close ok. Just got back from a couple of hours riding (in the rain!) and it still seems to choke when winding on the throttle when there’s a good bit load. (Eg. In the 30 range in 3rd and open up the throttle) Scary half way through an overtake and reach throttle half way and it bogs down! I’ll try Moto Rapido tomorrow and get it in to be sorted. Will update when I find out what the issue is. Gotta clean it first cus it’s now in a right state!!!
