new member, would you recommend the 796 or 1100

  1. Hello,
A while a go I discounted a monster as after sitting on it, it was far too small (the 696) and I'm 6 foot 2, so I bought a FZ6. I've now had my FZ6 for 3 years and I think it's time for a change. After discounting a Brutale I realised the Monster 796 and 1100 evo have higher sitting positions than the 696 (no local dealer to try yet) by about 1.5 and 2 inches compared to the 696.

Having not tried one yet, can someone tell me what differences I'll notice between the 796 and 1100? I can see the torque is massive on the 1100 and slightly more than my FZ6 for the 796, but I have no real idea what that translates to. I don't want a massively powerful and fast bike but I don't want something just slightly better than my FZ6. I was looking at stuff like the Brutale 800, VFR800, Z1000. I really fancied a streetfighter but the cost is too prohibitive.

I do mostly commuting and just want a bigger bike with less gear changing, which of the two would you pick?

    thanks.

I appreciate you've probably heard this question many times before :)

  2. 1100. Leave it in 3rd and never need to change up to about 50 lol

  3. You know you are going to have to try both and pick whichever you prefer.
The 1100 is really visceral engine and totally dominates the bike. It is , in my opinion a lovely , lumpy , torquey engine. The 796 is much smoother and seems to spin up the revs quicker and is probably a better choice if you do a lot of town riding.

  4. I think I like the white stripe on the 1100 than the black stripe on the 796 :)

  5. So, does anyone here have a Monster 1100 evo they use for daily commuting?

I wouldn't call it town riding, more a 15 mile ride (and back) across mostly dual carriageways mixed with a bit of filtering.

I guess on the 1100 if it is that much more mad to ride whether using the DTC on the highest setting ;)

btw, is this an issue with the 1100evo over here or is it fixed (DTC causing cut-outs)?

  6. Where do you live you cant get a test ride? Best thing is try and get a couple of hours and do you journey, see for yourself

  7. if economy features anywhere in the equation I would go 796. Performance difference isn't that noticeable between the two but it's true that you may have to change gear slightly more often on the smaller.

  8. I have an 1100S that I use for occasional commuting. 11 miles of town and open dual carriageway. It's an absolute hoot! Fantastic fun surfing on a wave of torque accompanied by the music of open Termi's...
    Do it!

  9. hmm. By brother in-law has had Ducatis all his life and owns an older (well, maybe 7 or 8 year old) monster and when my wife told him he tried to persuade her that I shouldn't get one as it won't be as reliable as my fazer and won't like it in the bad weather.

    Any thoughts? I'll be after a 2010/2011 1100evo probably.

  10. Rubbish. I've used my 848 through all sorts. Hasn't missed a beat. I had a 796 as a loan bike while mine was being serviced once. Loved it, so much that its no. 1 choice for a second bike to be used as my daily run around.

  11. Triumph Speed Triple :upyeah: The definition of lazy progress.

I got told by a policeman once that following me on mine wasn't fair as I never had to change gear.....Im still not sure if it was a criticism or a compliment
