Flip-up side-stand...

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by JR45, Jun 14, 2013.

  1. Two questions... Firstly, does anyone know a quick/cheap way of converting the flip-up side-stand on an ST4 to ordinary "stays down" operation? (I'm getting fed up with mine flipping up at inconvenient moments - see my other post about broken mirrors!). Secondly - given that the law says that there must be a way of stopping you from riding off with the side-stand down (on modern bikes at least) does anyone know if it would fail the MoT if it doesn't flip up?
    Cheers!

  2. If it's like a 916 style stand then a quick way is to grind down the bolt/nut? head that the spring pivots around. The official way is a new plate for the spring which I believe is also fairly inexpensive.

I actually prefer the flip-up and am considering changing my Monster stand to do the same

  3. If it's the same as the 916, you can buy a new bracket and nut from Ducati for about a fiver.

  4. My 600SS hasn't got the flip up stand, I am sure it has been converted, can't quite see how you could get it on and off a paddock stand safely by yourself with the flip up stand.

  5. Thanks for the advice guys... I'm figuring that it's covered by Vehicle Construction & Use regs, so it would be a pretty picky MoT tester that would fail it, but knowing my luck...
Having looked at it I reckon just shortening the pivot bolt would probably do the job - just wondered if anyone else had done it.
And Carlos - getting it on the paddock stand from the side-stand is nigh-on impossible, but fortunately the ST has a centre-stand...

  6. Thats what Rich at Louigi Moto did with mine on my SS. He was clever enough to push a hex socket right through the bolt first before cutting so that there was still something to tighten it up with.

  7. What sort of paddock stand are you using then? My SS is a piece of p*ss to put on a rear paddock stand off the sidestand, by myself.

The sidestand whether flip-up or stay down type won't interest an MOT tester...........after all, you don't have to have a stand for an MOT......and sidestand type varies across loads of bikes.

The SS one is modified like this pic, and I put two flats on it just to get a bit of 'extra tight'.........

  9. so where can we buy a conversion plate for the sui-side stand??ive seen them on ebay but theyre asking £20!!

Ive heard that a 999 or 1098 side stand will sit a 916, is this correct? im assuming that it wouldnt cure the flip up stand, but it is a bit stronger and longer to prevent the scary angle that the 916 leans at.

  10. Look at the bottom of my sidestand in the pic.......That stopped crazy lean angle....
