959 1299 Electrics On A 959

  1. Probably a pointless mod but was bored and after speaking to various people and being told it couldn’t be done, I thought I’d give it a go as that’s the way I am! Being a bit thick and stubborn can sometimes pay off...
Started off with a 1299 dash. Plugged it in and got the normal error and Unknown Device lights on the screen. Neither the abs or traction lights flashing.
Then bought the BBS off the same bike as this makes things a bit easier. The mileage is stored both in the dash and BBS. If you don’t use the matched pair, you’ll just get the ____ displayed where the mileage should be. A Texa can sync them but only to the higher stored mileage of the two.
Then I managed to get the 1299 main wiring harness, abs pump and IMU for an absolute steal from the states. Proper cheap, the whole lot came to about £250 which wouldn’t even get you an abs pump over here.
Unplugged the abs off the 959 and fitted the 1299 pump with the dash and bbs. Most of the errors then disappeared. This meant the BBS and ABS are the brains of the bike. At this stage I still had the rider mode flashing as it wasn’t seeing all the sensors, the inertial sensor error as I hadn’t fitted it yet and still had the Unknown device as I was using the 959 ecu.
Fitted the 1299 wiring loom last weekend as well as the IMU, it’s mounting bracket and the 1299 ecu turned up this morning. Just finished it all off and a all working as it should, I suppose as a 1299 should.
I did all this instead of just buying a 1299 because I think the 959 is a perfect engine for fast road riding and the 1299 would just be over kill in my case.
As a result I have a nicer dash, auto blipper, cornering abs and a few other bits.

  2. Bike starts and runs but rough. Obviously as both the timing and fuelling are miles out. . Hoping to get the bike re mapped sometime soon.

  5. Totally agree with the 959 being in the sweet spot.... And far better with a nicer dash to look at! Along with a few extras:upyeah: Nice work

  6. So basically a panigale V2 then :joy:. Impressive project though.

  8. Wow that’s an extreme mod!

Will be interested to see how things progress.

Is the 959 quickshifter rod the same as on the 1299? I would assume to get the blipper working the sensor would need to be there to detect the downshift and so assume it would be a a different shifter for the 1299?

The abs and traction control might be a bit odd too as it will be calibrated to different brakes and at the rear at least a different wheel width.

When do you reckon you will be able to give it it’s first road test???

  9. Hi mate. Can’t ride it as is until the 1299 ecu gets mapped for the 959 engine. The bike starts and will just about idle after it warms up but not very well. I can put the 959 ecu on and ride it no problem but won’t have the quickshifter.
The 1299 shifter is different as it’s push and pull for the auto blipper. The 959 is a two wire jobby while the 1299 has 3 wires.
Not sure yet how much the abs and traction control will differ... The 1299 has a tire calibration function which I’ve managed to do so the bike knows at least the circumference.
Will update as I go a long.

  10. yeah, will be good to know how easy they find it mapping the 959 stuff on there, I imagine it's funning extremely rich, because it's delivering enough fuel for a 1285cc capacity.

  11. Rich Phil? It took me nearly an hour to get rid of the stench of unburnt fuel in the house. Wife went mad! :mask:

  12. Waiting for a quote from Wilf. Spoke with him yesterday and said he could do it.

  13. Fair enough, I am sure he can do most stuff with them. I still can't believe you got an autoblipper working on it! does that mean the 899/959 actually has the sensor capable of doing auto-blip already fitted and it's just not enabled? If so that's a bit mental!

  14. No Phil. Nothing electric wise is compatible between the two. To get the auto blipper to work you need to put all the stuff on I did. The 959 ecu will only allow a one way quickshifter while the 1299 obviously goes both ways...

@LiveFast...... , just spoken with a tuning guy and he had a quick look on his computer to see the differences on start up from a fuelling point of view and unsurprisingly, the 1299 ecu pumps 25% more fuel through just at idle.

  15. Nice work. Just shows what can be done with the right attitude.

  16. Going through the 1299 owner’s manual reading up on the dash settings... loving the lean angle function although I can see this as being an easy distraction. :)
So I know the IMU sensor is working as it reads 0° when upright and laying the bike down side to side displays the lean angle.

On another note, does anyone know if the lambda sensors on the 959 are 12 or 17mm diameter? A reputable tuner was asking this as he reckons the 17mm lambdas are better for individual cylinder mapping?

  17. The stock sensors are 12mm narrow band so the tuner is talking about wide band sensors I assume. Tuning systems such as Rapidbike, Tuneboy or Woolich have optional wideband sensors but I thought if you are going for a full remap then you could get rid of the sensors all together - I’m pretty sure on most full remaps they get deleted and the fuelling is mapped properly on the dyno throughout all gears and rev ranges. Then the sensor holes are just plugged.

Bit weird if a tuner is asking - would kind if think it’s their bread and butter to know that sort if thing? Not a Ducati specialist I presume?

  18. Not sure mate...
Defo a decent tuner, BSD Performance in Peterborough. Enough good reviews about them.
I really need to have a read up on the Panigale owners’ reviews.

    Cheers

  19. Very nice transformation! I have done almost the same thing I have put 1199 electronics on my duc 1198:joy:
