Marvellous Marvin Hagler’s Dead. What a shame. My all time favourite boxer. Didn’t see that coming. I’ll never forget the night he knocked 7 bells out of Alan Minter in front of a crowd of very upset cockernee wankers....
My favourite too. The era of Hagler, Hearns, Leonard and Duran was the best ever in boxing, and Hagler was the best of them.
Hagler was a legend , remember sitting there watching the Minter fight with my father and the outcome was inevitable, fight with Hearns was outstanding.
Hagler was one of my favourite boxers too, at his peak simply incredible to watch, and near on impossible to beat. Not to take anything away from Minter as he was a top sportsman too, but he must have known there was no way he could leave the ring as world champion after the first round. Reading his obituaries -apparently Hagler used to answer his 'phone "Marvellous here" - brilliant! RIP sir, a great boxer, athlete & legend.
Fight of the century that. Hearns gave Hagler an almighty smack early in the 1st round. But Hagler was ridiculously tough. I don’t think he was ever dropped in his career.
RIP Marvellous, he changed his name by deed poll to it. I don’t know if it’s me , rose tinted specs or a dodgy memory, but the big fights back in the day were so much more than nowadays. There seemed to be so many more people truly engaged in clashes of Titans, in boxing more often than not these titans came from under privileged backgrounds, so were entering uncharted territory. I think that’s why the boxing was better, because they boxed from the heart and not for the next Nike ads deal? Again a true legend has been lost.
Thanks to @Groundhog for posting THOSE 3 rounds which I have just watched. Marvellous has passed but watching that had me out of my seat and on tenterhooks, unbelievable, And I can’t find the right words to describe that?
We were lucky to see four of the best boxers of all time fighting each other over a decade. Hard to say who was ultimately the best, they were all brilliant in different ways, but Hagler was always my favourite.
That’s the most famous fight ever. I still watch it from time to time.... It’s a mesmerising dust up...
