1299 Shock Spring

  1. On a base 1299 is the std shock spring an Ohlins ?
    Bike has a Ohlins spring on std shock and wanted to know what weight it is for on std base bike shock

    21041 29/90 L2617
    Anyone know ??
     
  2. An ohlins shock chart was loaded at somepoint today.
     
  3. Pretty sure the standard shock and spring are made by Sachs.
    That spring looks like a 90 N/mm, which I'm sure is the standard 1299 rate.

    From this table I found elsewhere:
    Rider Weight (In Gear) - Spring Rate
    150 Lbs. - 75Nm
    170 Lbs. - 80Nm
    190 Lbs. - 85Nm
    210 Lbs. - 90Nm
    230 Lbs. - 95Nm
    250 Lbs. - 100Nm
     
  4. yep I agree with @Sonic its either a 90 or 95. I bought an ohlins spring hoping that it would fit but it didn't - the sachs collar was about 2mm too big to fit inside the spring. I actually machined the collar down for it to fit on a lathe, which worked fine. I tried several different ohlins springs and found at my weight of 65kg the 75 spring was best for me.
    I subsequently upgraded to k-tech - if you are intetested in having your spring collar reduced happy to do it , I can even send you my old one first - and different springs if i still have them and you want to go lighter (can't remember what i've got as i generally share springs around friends who are trying stuff out)

  5. I didn't think that it was possible to swap springs with Sachs shocks. I didn't think that they were rebuildable. Obviously, I am wrong. I will look again.
     
  6. Springs can be swapped on anything. That’s not the bit that gets ‘rebuilt’. That’s the valving etc
     
  7. Yes I agee with it being a 90 as above .
    And it’s definitely an Ohlins spring on my sach shock .
    I’d be I interested if you had a 80 or possibly a 85 spring for sale ? cheers

The 'Standard' Ohlins TTX Springs as fitted to S models are much thicker than the Sachs fitment ones, so if you have an Ohlins on there it's an Ohlins part made to fit to Sachs shock as I think others have also said. Looks like a 90Nm, I have a 85Nm on mine and it's good on the road for my weight which is 200lb, looking at the above I should have a 90/95 but for road stuff never with a pillion it is plenty stiff enough!

  14. So with the one on the left, HTF do you easily remove the spring?
     
  15. Must be from the top, the preload seems to be the other end. Switched mine the other week and can’t temper tbh
     
  16. The picture doesn’t quite show it but the spring sits quite far down the body. So you can wind all the preload off and take the bottom retainer off. The Ohlins sits at the top of the body and is adjusted for preload at the other end

  18. So you compress the spring - makes sense - and can you then unscrew one of the ends?

  20. Found a blurry picture, but it will explain - once the spring tension is taken off the collar you can slide it out sideways - note the gap in the collar - no need to disassemble the shock further.
