Yup, you’re onto it....including the “green” comment, really not sure about it yet... No, bit of faffing required, 749R triples are 53/56mm and BFF’s are 50/55mm. Axle is supposedly same size as 749/999, and these Gen 5 (?) ZX10R forks are also 100mm caliper spacing. I’ll post some more pic’s shortly: I have a ZX10R axle stashed somewhere, wish me luck...
Jussi is all over it. I've been investigating a decent front end for my 749R/999RS project for a while; I would have loved Ohlins etc but anything of decent spec is just "moonbeams" expensive, and/or involved machining the 749R triples which I just wasn't comfortable with. Then I saw some BRAND NEW, never fitted, Gen 5 ZX10R Showa BFF forks for (super) cheap and started investigating: same axle size as 749/999, same caliper spacing...and smaller than than the 749R triples = no machining. They might not have the "cashe" of the gold stuff but realistically the BFF are about the best OEM forks you can buy at the moment and I'd have to spend a shitload more to get something any better. Given my budget it was a no brainer. So I set about turning aluminium into swarf: Fitted to triples: The lower triples were a little more awkward with only 1.0mm difference in diameter, so I just used some simple 0.5mm ally shim...not exactly elegant but I didn't fancy my chances machining something that thickness. As it is you have to be looking for it to notice it. And there's the guts of it (old/spare rim, just for fit up): Caliper's fit, and the axle fits, although it is a tad long which should be easy enough to sort: So it looks fairly doable so far, the only real issue is the rotor offset: I have some 3mm rotor spacers and they aren't quite enough, with the rotors jammed against the inner guide posts of the calipers: Some 4.25mm Marchesini spacers would be ideal....I can see some nightshift investigations coming up, lol.
