Im sure this will be easy for someone to tell me if I've done this right. I've read a few posts about preload setting but this has always been a bit hard for me to grasp. I checked my right side fork setting and it was pretty much fully out. I wound it clockwise and there's 10 full turns to the stop. I wound it back out to where it was again. Based on what I've read on here, I should wind it in one full turn per 15kg in riding gear? Weight inc gear is 91kg. So I wound clockwise 6 turns. Would this be correct? It measured about 28mm to a tie wrap on the fork leg with just the weight of the bike , and about 48mm with me sat on it with my riding gear on. Length of available fork leg travel is about 160mm. Does this seem about normal or have I just made a complete fool of myself on here
I agree with Bradders if your max travel is 160mm then your ideal Rider Sag is 53mm. You’re just 5mm out. Increase the preload to reduce the Rider Sag and decrease the preload to increase the Rider Sag. Try reducing the preload by one turn to see if that adds the extra 5mm. Make sure you adjust both fork legs identically. Also check the compression & rebound damping settings are the same on both legs.
My bike has skyhook so can only adjust on the right side fork Paul, but I'll try the extra turn tomorrow when I've slept off this bottle of wine
Ime I went 15kg principle then came back half a turn and it was great on mine both MY13 and MY15 bikes
I'll try half a turn then a full turn and take more measurements. So just to be clear , winding clockwise adds preload?
Did you read my post from last weekend? Mine is a 1200s but it’s all pretty much the same. Except your steering head angle is slightly different to give you a longer wheelbase. Obviously that’s not adjustable. You are definitely correct to wind out the right fork adjuster anti-clockwise all the way. Then wind it in 6 turns clockwise. The general consensus of opinion is that this is slightly harsh so... wind it out anti-clockwise half a turn. That’s it. I adjusted my rear suspension as well, electronically. I suggest set it to rider+pillion or + luggage as well. It’s push button stuff. Then ride it!!! I guarantee it will go round bends beautifully. Provided you have correct tyre pressures. Try sport and touring settings. See the chart on my post last weekend, it will help you understand the settings. Let us know how it goes.
Yeah it's your post that made me have a go at setting mine up Does adjusting the rear settings, to what you say, depend on the lump sitting on it? I'm 91kg in all my gear
Ha! Of course it does but you’re not that much more than me. Why not try setting to two up plus luggage then ride it. Then stop and set it to two up, which is obviously slightly softer. Also set to sport and work down to touring, you can feel the difference. If it starts to weave in bends it’s gone too soft... simples. I’m going to cook a full English breakfast now, then later I’ll take a look at my dash settings. I think I set a couple of things in there to ‘harder’, but that was yonks ago so I can’t remember. I was out on mine yesterday and it flicks from left-right-left effortlessly with no weave, it tracks the line you want it to and you feel more confidence with the tyres. Before it was like going round a 50p piece if you know what I mean. Even dead slow mini roundabouts. Now I love it.
Rights guys, I've tried those suggestions and it makes absolutely no difference. I've also measured the rider sag with fork adjusted fully in, to fully out, and barely a change. Totally confused now Does the engine have to be running for any changes to take effect?
We still talking front sag? How are you measuring it? Unless you have an internal issue I can’t think why, if you wind it all the way in, it is no different at static sag
Yes still front sag. The bike is on side stand untill i sit on it, then take a measurement from tie wrap to to fork seal as in the photos. Am i doing it wrong?
Id measure static first tbh. IE without you on it as it’s easy to measure. Wind all off, wind in what you think, take off stand and blind a few times, reset cable ties to top, re lift on stand and measure that. TBH I never measured my multi at all, I just felt it was better when I rode it. The electronics are so critical for everything on that bike I didn’t bother.
Right I've had a play with the settings and found how to set front and rear load modes to 14 for single rider on sport and touring as others have set on other threads, set r/h fork preload to 5 1/2 turns in from fully out, set touring suspension to medium (default) , sport mode to harder. I have 55mm rider sag now so just need to take it out for a little bimble to see what effects are. Now i know my way around how to find all the settings I'll go from there
Best way. Seat of pants testing. Take a spanner with you for the preload and it’s 10 Dec job yo change one way or other.
Yep, never mind about measuring it, take it out and test ride it. Then you’ll feel the difference. Or have you ridden it today? My day got filled up and I didn’t get chance to check the settings on my dash but I’m 99% sure I upped the Sport and Touring settings to harder. Next weekend I should have more time.
