Taaaa daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Looks like these are just standard struts and I have random engine thread sizes! Oh the joys of owning a ducati.
Those two look like two different size threads or is that an optical illusion? Have you tried a bolt in the head threads to see what size they are? If so, what are they? (You are leaving us guessing at what size they are.....if you don't know thread sizes, a rear footrest carrier to frame bolt is M8 and a front caliper to fork bolt is M10). If you have say, M10 head threads but the struts are M8 threads, you can always use inserts.....plenty available..... AL.
It's an optical illusion! For someone who works with cameras all day I could have done a better job! Yeah, before your suggestion I placed an M10 bolt on the strut and it defo fits. The mounting point looks to be M8. Work mate suggested a couple of stainless steel threaded bars which I'm considering.
Are you saying the bars are M10 and the head threads are M8? If so, I think there is enough meat around the M8 hole to tap it head M10....It looks like ther is on mine, anyway. AL PS and if you work with cameras, do you know anyone that wants three Pentax AF SLR film jobbes with lenses?
Yep, that's what I'm saying. I may have tap one side as one of the struts has a removeable screw, so I can get an insert sorted for that and then get a M8 grub screw. Do you have your fairings of at the moment Al? If so, if you have a chance, is it possible to take a few pics of the mounting points? I don't want to tap the wrong part. Thanks I actually work in broadcast tv, but a few of the guys are serious about stills cameras, so will ask around
My fairings have been off for two months with a tax disc still in an unopened envelope!! I will put a couple of pics up later........(just about to pack up my huge drum kit 'cos I've finally sold it!) but the right side can be seen in the photo I put up earlier. AL
These are from pics when I first got the bike.....so it's dirty......but you can see where the struts are fixed. You may have a job tapping the left side unless you have a really long tap...........but why not just get the right size thread struts....it seems that M8 are most recent thread sizes.... However looking at your photo of the struts again, are you sure they are M10??....because if Paul's thicker ones are still M8 then I reckon you should check all the thread sizes you have with known bolts and nuts... AL
Have you tried to find any kind of supports /struts for Supersports? Unobtainium!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm in no rush as the fairings are doing fine without them, but I would like the support. I may just go for a couple of thread bars. TBH, I've really fallen out of love with my SS and want shot of it now. :frown:
Well.....I found a pair fairly easily....note a 'pair' includes two different lengths.............. AL.
For you info......the thread sizes in the heads and on the struts on both Paul's and my bike are definitely M8, even though the strut diameters are different.....Paul's are the thicker ones, mine are the thinner waisted ones.............I have seen and compared them today. So whatever struts you have got, the threads should be M8, as should the threads in the head. AL.
Ok, after some investigation with my work colleague we found that the tread size in the cylinders weren't even M8 but appeared to be M5. So will drilled it out using a 5m bit and increased the size of the bits in increments of 1m till we got to 8m. We found that a bit too small to tap so I think we went up to 8.5 or 9. Then tapped at M10 x 1.5 (with the use of an adjustable spanner as the tap length was too short) and struts fitted perfectly.
It seems to me that your bike wasn't to be fitted with a full fairing from production.......but M10 is big for those threads, so I wonder what model / year the struts came off. AL.
