Hi, Noticed small amount of coolant under bike. Taken fairings off to look, levels are good but think I have identified the culprit. On the left/top/front of engine is a small hose approx 10mm diameter with clip that has coolant weeping around it. I don't think I can get to it without some serious dismantling though. After some info please, what is the hose, where does it go, easiest fix? Have attached a picture..thanks.
That tube is the crankcase breather pipe going to the airbox above, the coolant won't be coming from that tube, it will be coming from the water pump weep hole which is to the right and up a bit in your picture. It's quite a common occurence and not a problem unless is losing alot of coolant.
It's not coming from there mate, it's coming from the pressure release behind the water pump between the V, I had it on my 899 and it's new water pump time. Ducati fixed mine under warranty as it was only a few days out of warranty but it lost water quickly so don't run it for miles before getting it sorted. I've also seen it happen to a mates 959 with less than 1k miles on it and it's well documented across the web, normally people notice water running down and around the alternator.
Correct answer! My 1299 had this. New pump fitted under warranty, problem returned soon after. Ducati no longer considers it a fault, unless the loss of coolant is serious. Later bikes even have a tube to carry away the leaking coolant.
I have run it a few few times (in the garage) for maybe 20 min while watching and can't see anything. Also no drips etc afterwards? Dealer has offered to inspect if I ride in, but not likely for a while in this weather/lockdown.
I've got the same issue. Is the pump a serviceable item, i.e. new seals or you have to replace the whole pump? Checked the Ducati parts catalogue and it doesn't appear to be serviceable. Have seen various replies from ignore it to replace the pump. If mine continued leaking at the current rate its not ok to leave but does it ever get better or worse or once its started going, it caries on leaking?
My 1299 had the same issue, water pump replaced but still see a little from time to time. As long as it isn't causing a sudden drop in coolant, you should be fine. If in doubt, get it checked out.
Dropped off at dealers for investigation. Turns out to be thermostat housing and requires replacement. They have asked for ducati contribution despite being out of warranty as a gesture. Let’s see what happens!
I replaced the pump in the end and that sorted it, no more weep. You can’t replace seals in the pump and it was losing too much water to ignore so I bit the bullet and did the job. £200 off for the pump and a days work at a steady pace and it’s done.
Ask them to show you the old Thermostat housing, if the mechanism has gone through the side, you'd have the same issue as i had with the thermostat housing. I was initially quoted £480 to have it replaced, but Ducati UK covered the costs.
