If I'd just bought a new bike Id be very disappointed right now. But there's a saying, everyone has problems, but its what your prepared to do about it that sets you apart from the rest. Some company's try and cover it up or ignore it. Well done to Ducati for 'fessing up. Hope you guys get it sorted asap and Ducati compensate you appropriately. I'm off to ride my 1260 now
Agreed BMW are living off past service and quality. Claim to be a premium brand but the only thing premium.is the price the rest is very average. Fancy showrooms and shit service seems to be the norm.
I had a new engine out of BMW for my GS. Can’t fault the dealer or the mothership over that issue. The issue was poor paint finish on engine cases. So not an issue that would impinge on riding the thing.
I won’t go into it 2 much here because I’ve already been banned off the S1000RR forum over this New Gen 4 S1000RR in summary: oil cooler replaced - 3 months in a Spanish dealer Brake calipers seals leaking - 4 weeks with dealer First carbon rear wheel cracked - 2 weeks at the dealer Second carbon wheel crack - 6 weeks with the dealer various other insignificants like body work, paint coming off the frame and sub frame all dismissed by BMW UK who won’t deal with customers directly and throw it all back on the dealers, some of whom I do have sympathy for as they try their best without the support of BMW. BMW did issue me with a free set of forged wheels after I threatened to reject the bike when the second carbon wheel cracked and they also replaced the carbon rims for me at the same time, so they have to be credited with that.
All good points, hence I said I hadn't dealt with their warranty, but I guess proves the point, if someone had asked me I would know no different until now really. I had a issue with Warped discs and a Camshaft where the buckets 'dished' on my 07 ZX6R and honestly it sat with the dealer for weeks and they were just really difficult from start to end. I've been fairly happy with Ducati though in the past, my 848 had some stuff done, the paint flaked off the mag headlight bucket, and the Panigale had a water pump fail 3 days out of warranty and it was all sorted no issues. maybe BMW are cutting corners in that area and Ducati are spending a little more. I'm sure it's cyclic, just like all industry
Theres no mention of it on the MCN website at the moment. I guess stuff like this doesn’t pay their bills!
BMW K1600GT: replacement of waterpump, 7 weeks at dealer, after that again new waterpump needed, and mecanicien forgot a correct bleeding of water cooling system. In the mountains temperature was rising always into the red area, forced us to stop and to wait 10 minutes for cooling down, each serious slope again and again. Replacement of radiator (600 €) did not help. The window mechanisme (650 €) was worn out after 60.000 km. The Navigator VI, original BMW (850€) refused to follow the route etcetc. No BMW again for me. Expensive accessoires like bluetooth connection in helmet did not work. And so on.
I had a similar issue on my ZXR400, but in my experience the dealer were superb and Kawasaki stepped up to, bike was out of warranty but Kawasaki supplied all the parts free and the dealer did the work at cost, that was my first Kawasaki and on the back of that experience I went on to buy 7 more over the years. I believe the dealer influence got the result when they could have easily said “sorry mate, out of warranty” and id have probably never bought a Kawasaki again?
Visited my dealer yesterday and had a long chat with the service manager about this. From their end customer has the choice of dealer engine replacement or back to the factory for the same. The latter would be 6 to 8 weeks. They're expecting the first batch of engines next week with 16 hours work on each bike. They will be doing each bike sequentially with the next collected in the mean time. Customers will get a service package as compensation and, if required, a loan bike whilst theirs is in. IIRC more than half of the bikes they've sold are affected. Their demo bike is one but won't be dealt with until all customer bikes have been. So no demo rides for a while. Their cheif tech has had his diary block booked to do these. Seems like they, and Ducati, are doing the right thing. I was there to have the cause of my engine management light investigated. Took the bike for a ride on Monday in a final attempt to clear it to no avail. Only noticed on the way there yesterday morning that it was no longer illuminated. Tech explained the logic behind it being on or off. Seems that it was low battery over winter plus, possibly, the exhaust valve. Checking cause of EML I had found valve a bit sticky and not returning on the spring so fitted Healtech Servo eliminator and lock-wired the valve open. No charge for the investigation which was surprisingly unexpected.

I called the dealer recognizing that I had been a bit too friendly. I pushed them for a solution. Conversation went Dealer- We have 4 bikes to fix, 1 is insisting on it being returned to Ducati. Two other we can change the engine. The third is unsold. We can do an engine change in 12 hours and Ducati pay us 16 J - I am happy for you to change the engine. D- Other option is we also have an unsold bike here unaffected you can have that J- What is the spec? (wait for it fully loaded 1000+ to pay) D-Identical to yours J-Why would I not want that? D-Indeed J-Go
I had a bmw r1200 rt about 6 k of warranty work lots of things went wrong no quibble but my s1000xr they refuse to acknowledge vibration problem instead tried to sell me new X-r which still has vibes i r had no issues otherwise
I wonder if the new engine will be fitted with casings that are the same colour both sides to indicate that its finally finished and ready to sell?
I guess the only thing then @johnny is you don’t get the compensation package as well, (but you do get a new bike straight away)
Yep i did consider that however, I just wanted the bike. My experience with compensation is that is never as good in the actuality as it is in the offer, so that tempered my thoughts too.
Hmmm. Ok. Cards on table. Currently have Ducati and BMW. I do not worry about the BMW. Number 3. Fault free. 3 rd Ducati. Plenty faults with the first one. Premium? Laugh. So Ducati is not premium? Price at least. BMW service in UK and here has always been superb. No complaints about Ducati service either. Bigger question on quality.
Needs to be two years extra warranty not service. Only way to get confidence back into the product, come on DUCATI if you believe in the v4 show it.
