Heads up guys, remember to lube up the side stand. Mine was starting to stick (on my still very new 1260 S GT...) and on the ride on Saturday with a large'ish group (15 riders) with me leading. I pulled the group over for a break, my wife got off and I put the side stand down but didn't check!!! Next thing I know, I felt the bike bite onto the side stand and lean forward a little and I knew instantly what was coming but by this time, I was already at the side. It weighs a fucking tonne!!! I took 90% of the weight as I was still right next to it. But by the time I reacted it was too late, I got slammed into the floor and the back of my head bounced off the road and cracked my lovely carbon fibre AGV Sportsmodular Thankfully a hairline crack and only a couple of cm long so it's more just a couple of small scratches. The tank protector fairing had a scuff and a small crack but thank the 2 cylinder gods, nothing else hit the road, the crack and scuff came from me putting pressure on the bike as I went down. Anyway, my pride was the cost of this PSA... lube those fucking side stands lol. My bike is going into Ducati tomorrow to have the fairing replaced. I'm just going to bend over the moment they finish the work as I know it won't be cheap. Silver lining, it's the first time I've had a bike go down on me in over a decade, so I'm in the clear for another 10 years.
I feel your pain. If your bike hasn't fallen over yet it's only a question of time. It's the nature of the beast.
My Pani rolled off the side stand. A mirror, a clip-on and the pillion seat which hit the foot-peg on my adjacent bike took one for the team. Ouch. There's two types of riders: those that have dropped their bike and those that will. Same for helmets.
We’ve all done it at some point, I parked on an Alpine road and the camber of the road tipped the bike over before I could stop it. I think the weight of the panniers and top box helped it on its journey. I’m just surprised you didn’t break a hand guard!
I saw that happen! It pivoted over the end of the side stand. Either it was the weight of the luggage or the pilot My smugness didn't last long as next day I dropped mine in a French gutter which was deeper than my leg was long. Included in the damage reports were a broken handguard each.
On a tour of northern Spain, after a long day ending just inside Portugal, my mate, having made the schoolboy error of parking his fully loaded GSA on the centre stand facing downhill, pulled it forward off centre stand with the side stand down. The bike dropped, pogo’d on the side stand and he dropped the lot into the hotel receptionists VW Golf, smashing every panel on its nearside!!
With the force my head hit the ground, enough to put me in a daze for a few seconds and have a splitting headache for most of that evening. I'd imagine the helmet 'should' be replaced. But I had a good rummage around and I can't see any damage to the foam. I'm no lid expert so I'm sure it's compromised. However the shell it's self, aside from the hairline crack, it's just a few scratches. What's even more annoying, on Friday I just fit a Sena 50R to the helmet so I'd have to order more velcro sticky pads if I replaced the helmet with another one lol.
You need to replace your helmet. It is useless now. There could well be cracks you can't see. How much do you value your head?
I'm no expert on helmets either. I only wear one because its the law, though I would use one when riding fast as its more comfortable when your face isn't rippling like a a flag in the wind, not to mention the vision! Plus its a weather shield here in Britain! LOL I doubt your helmet will work fully or as it should, but I wouldn't change it if it were mine. If I were still in the USA, I wouldn't be wearing one half the time anyway.
We’ve all been there. A few weeks ago, I stupidly put my helmet on the mirror of my 790 Adventure and wheeled it out of the garage. We have a slight slope which didn’t help, but while wheeling it forward, I turned the bars, causing the helmet to go flying. In trying to catch the helmet, the bike went down, as did I. Miraculously, the helmet landed on its base, where all the padding is, so there was no damage at all. And the replacement plastic bits on the bike cost about £70. Lesson learnt!
For reference, this is the damage to the lid. Im not gonna replace it, I'm just being a little silly thinking I should of I'm honest. Now, if I had a crash and the lid took the brunt of the impact, then yes, I'd replace. But this was falling over... About to head to ducati, might ask to test ride a V4 if they have one. Not interested in it but would be nice to try it regardless.
I would get the helmet chcked by a specialist. Helmets are designed to work once and once only. The marks look superficial and may well be so but for a few hundred pounds its not worth the risk.
A black permanent marker (Stabilo are good) will hide the scratches in the black section so you will never notice them. Car paint touch up would fix the the other red & green blemishes -car parts stores will have it , though model shops will have it too (cheaper).
Hmmm... you probably should change it. If, god forbid, you are hurt in an accident it may affect your ability to use insurance cover due to faulty equipment, etc. No expert, so may be speaking out of turn, but small print and all that...
Also, here is the damaged fairing. I went to Ducati today, they had a good look over it and concluded that yea, it's only the tank protector fairing that has damage. A small scuff (very small, I actually missed it) at the vey end of the LH grip protector. I've had them order a new fairing as this is a brand new bike still and I don't want to go around riding it with a crack and a scuff, I know, it's silly but I'm proud of having my first from factory brand new bike and I wish to keep it in as best condition I can. The price however... Good lord, it's extortionate so I've certainly learnt to not trust the ability of the side stand fully flicking out and to check it from now on. Odd, never had my 1200 S side stand stick.
About 15 minutes into my Multistrada ownership I dropped it from my hydraulic lift. Happily, my body took most of the damage as I threw myself in between the bike and the garage floor. One new handguard later and it was back to brand new. I considered myself very lucky.
I’d be exactly the same. My bike is meant to fall over, but I couldn’t live with the scratched bits! Dare I ask how much the panel costs?
I think he said around 650 euro's (including VAT), not including cost for him to fit it. I don't know, I'll post when I pay them and let you guys know.
