Went to Box yesterday on the 1098 and noticed evidence of drippage near the side stand area. @Chris suggested leaky clutch slave. Decided to investigate today.. Summats not reet here (belly pan): I knew I had a bit of a weep for a while previous that I have as yet failed to trace that shows as wet wiring around the ecu/reg-rec. One would assume the likely culprit here is the rubber bung where the generator wiring exits the casing however this is dry as a bone. Strangely, the generator plug connector to reg-rec is wet but the wires leading into it from above are not. Weird. Now, here’s the money shots for the other leak that appears near the side stand area. Bit of history...had a chain snap at Brands in 2019...thought I’d got away with it with a bit of scrapes on the casing...perhaps I was wrong. It appears that there is a crack in the alternator casing. I started the motor and the area pictured became a bit damp. Thank the Lord the damage isn’t on the sand cast cases. So, that would explain the oil evidence around the side stand area. Any suggestions about the other oiliness at the ecu area?
bloody hell R.. you are so unlucky mate, Re: "front leak" - there is a drain that exits above front exhaust primary and runs very close to it, so close that mine's melted through and i've now shortened it, it runs down from the air filter body as per picture above. Also, you have at least two more drains that cannot exit onto the road due to your belly pain so I guess those can’t be ruled out either
Is the drain from the air box? Exits downward and ends up running between the oil cooler and vee piece?
err, yes it is, my bike happens to be outside so could go and follow it down, and it is logical. The standard belly pain has a designated little Gromit for the tube to fit into. Re-: airbox drain, I don’t think your motor is particularly asthmatic though is it? You’ve never seen oil there or had a wet air filter? I guess you’ve checked the oil cooler hose runs and unions already.
Oil cooler hoses and unions are on RHS so not likely to be them (checked anyway and dry as a dry thing). The strange thing is that drain hose routes forward of the battery box so not sure that’s the culprit. The oil appears to originate on the aft side of the box, where the generator wiring plug is and then track forward along the ecu plug wire and the reg-rec wire. The lower edge of the plastic battery box is wet.
total long shot and unlikely, but have you heard of the one where oil works it's way down the generator wiring loom from within engine? It's incredible but it does happen, would be fairly easy to check providing your loom sheath/wrap is intact.
Ah, so it tracks along the inside of the wires through the rubber grommet? That could be it. So, when I get a new casing, I can investigate further. Lucky me. BTW, anybody know if 1098R LH side case is specific or is it same as 1098 or 1198 non R models?
I would put money on it being the same as cooking/1198 etc, a check at Stein Dinse or better still Ducati Omaha will confirm.
it's the same as 1098, 1198 has a "C" at end instead of a "B" (and is probably interchangeable but needs confirmation). :- 242-2-074-1AB (1098R generator crankcase "cap")
I can confirm that oil does travel down through the wiring loom with vibratation as i changed the fuel injector wiring harness on the TD5 which is a known fault, before it enters into and wrecks the ECU £2/3k replacement price from landrover.
My 1098R had a fairly untraceable oil leak which eventually turned out to be nothing more than a split between the two halves of the crankcase breather valve. I had been quoted up to 3k for a repair which ended up costing 30€. Check this if you haven’t already.
John - remember that time you came to Brands and my chain snapped and I had ridden to the track coz my bloody Alfa had broken down so I was stuck and you were there with your lovely Jag with a tow bar and we had to go back to mine to get my trailer….that time!
