Not a lot as it’s been raining all day so far. Much needed as the ground is baked hard and parched but does rather dampen the enthusiasm for getting the bike out. Still, jobs to do inside, including fitting an electric shower in the upstairs bathroom in preparation for being without a boiler for a few days. Andy
The reason I asked was because some time back I capped six unused chimney pots with something similar to what you have used Three years later I removed them and fitted air vents to each chimney breast in each room in order to let the stacks breathe. The condensation problem it caused was huge. Drying the internal of the unused chimney stacks is still an ongoing issue. In another property I found it better to remove the unused chimney stack below the roof line and slate over, this action cures the problem, but can take away from the charm and originality of the property roofline, however it eliminates any ingress of damp through condensation in to the rooms below. Nice brickwork btw.
Good info. The stacks have had the air bricks replaced above the roofline, and they have been sealed for a long time for over 25 years so hopefully there will be no issues. They weren't all capped previously so I guess I will have to keep fingers crossed now as the scaffolding comes down tomorrow...
Fingers crossed. If it does show itself it’ll take a couple of years of fluctuating weather conditions to create enough condensation to penetrate. I’ve been to numerous properties where the owners are convinced it’s a roof problem. Roof tiles checked, lead flashing and soakers checked, nothing. Look inside the capped chimney and its been soaking. I’m wondering now if that’s why we get so many weeds growing from the brickwork?
Now is that was the size of a motorcycle security chain we all would be in trouble lifting the fecker through the rear wheel.
Had my second haircut of he year! First one at the beginning of January a few days before the last lockdown! I usually get it cut about every six weeks. I am not betting on when the next time - especially with Boris giving up on his!
