rad project full steam ahead!!

  1. OK, here we go. After having a few high end lightly modded duc's I decided to take the plunge and go a full ground up build. Ive built a fair few bikes in the past from LC's to dragbikes but having owned probably upwards of 70 bikes the only bike that truly stirs my soul are duc's. so after a good look round a rad style bike looked to fit the bill so the parts gathering began. So far I have a 999 nero frame, a DS1000 engine with loom, injection etc ,
theres no way I could live without a proper noisey open dry clutch. A full S2r rearend a pair of classic 5 spoke marchesini wheels with full floating brembo discs. All decent classic Duc bits.
ive gone for the Rad montjuich tt bodywork without the fairing but with the race style bellypan.
ive started the machining work on the swingarm to take bearings, seals etc and revised suspension rocker arm position, in the style of the stock 999 arrangement. Revised shape cross brace to clear the throttle bodies and bracket removal aplenty. ill pop up some pics rough as it sits and some as I progress. of I can land some decent forks, IE nitrided 999s etc and 916 yokes theres a serious danger of it being on its wheels in fairly shory order. I'll keep you all posted.
    Dave.

  2. Pictures please, and lots of them!

  3. Love it. Bring it on. :upyeah:

  4. thanks for the encouraging words folks. final edition, that looks a lovely project. the S4r rocker does need moving across to the right. so I refabricated the bracket off the higher cross tube to carry it as per stock 999. its only the single lower cross brace that needs remaking with a curve to fit under the throttle bodies. nothing to major. ill gey some pics up asap to let you see the frame mods. and the swinger as the machining progresses to convert it to a bearing carrying type. I cant remember being this excited about a project.
    Dave.

  5. Is the expression "full steam" a reference to the cooling system?

  6. LOL, I hope not. that wss the only issue with my old Monster, very radiatory/plumbingish. but it did go like a stabbed rat!!!

  7. It squeaked?

  8. Died?

  9. Squeaked then died?

  10. Ok a little progress today, the cross tube and the extraneous brackets have all been removed from my frame and the template for the rear suspension ricker arm made up. when all the smoothing of the tubes has been finished ill post some pics of the frame itself.
laughably yesterday afternoon I called in to my local branch of a national steel stockholders and ask about some T45 tubing and was greeted with a blank stair, so I said " chromoly?" only to be asked "is that really shiny? "
I didnt feel there was much to to be gained by further conversation so thanked the member of sales staff and his 4 counterparts for there help and left.

  11. Try custom cages for t45 chap..... They get through miles of it, not sure on what diameter they'll have on the shelf though

  12. Thanks ross, im on it tomorrow. the stockholders that supply custom cages is just round the corner from there az I only need 22mm stuff, not much call for that kinda diameter in a rollcage I reckon. Id ask the stockist that we use through work to get me some but thatd mean owing my gaffer one which cant happen as id feel a bit guilty when I finally get round to telling him to stick his job. lol.

  13. We need pics :frown:

  14. I know I know. rheres just lots of dirty and dephiled parts about at the moment. ill have some progress made by the weekend. I took my yokes to work today to vapour blast the bottom one and try to work out what im gonna do with the top one.i ll hopefully will have finished bracket removal. and maybe have my swingarm back too. Also maybe just maybe there'll be some forks too. lots and lots of pics then for sure.

  15. cool, I'd assume they wouldn't have it, but would point you the right way.

There is a guy on eBay..... Item no. 330934321860

  16. If you're only adding/moving a couple of cross braces, mild steel tubing will be fine and readily available in all sizes for next to nothing, any weight/strength differences will be negligible.

Of course if you're building a custom frame...

  17. got the tube sorted earlier, but thanks desmo? I hear what your saying. ;-)

  18. OOOOOHHHHH SHIIIINNYYYY.ok first post is my lovely new forks picked up this very night via the wanted section.
