So after getting back into biking after 15 years I have discovered that none of my kit fits!! I am looking at buying a helmet but unsure where to go, I am in Wiltshire but don't mind travelling, I did visit a shop at the weekend but got the feeling that they were trying to sell me what they had in the shop and not what would fit properly, I am looking for a place where they stock a good range of helmets and have knowledgeable staff who can fit it correctly, does such a place exist??
For many years now, I have bought my helmets from Helmet City. Your nearest retail outlet would be either Cheltenham or Oxford. Oxford will certainly fit the helmet to you, don’t know about Cheltenham as I've not been to that store. Andy
I recommend Helmet City. I used the one in Cheddar and they were very attentive and sorted me & my odd-shaped head perfectly. They have a wide range too.
I guess you just dont buy fakes ? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224391194709?hash=item343ec1e855:g:Q4UAAOSwPm5gUOWu surely in 2021 its easy to figure out whether a shop is reputable or not
That's great, Cheddar are the nearest to me although I also see they have a shop in West Bay Dorset, I may visit them and treat the family to fish and chips! Thanks evryone
If you know your size and don't want the helmet fitted, the Sportsbike Shop, Infinity or Helmet City all seem to have reliable couriers. If you want it fitted, visit Helmet City. Andy
I was impressed with Helmet City when we were buying a helmet for my girlfriend, this was at the Cheltenham store. Personally I've scoped out the helmet I'm interested in at the NEC bike show at the manufacturers stand and then gone around the retailers there to get the best deal. Either that or last time bought the same model I already had online, at the time was due to be replaced (GT Air > GT Air II) and got something of a bargain. Next time around, based on experience with them here, it'll probably be Helmet City, Cheltenham. They were knowledgable, patient and helpful. I don't mind spending a little more for local retail, especially if the service is good.
You obviously can't buy a helmet online unless you've already been somewhere and tried on that exact make, model and size somewhere first. J&S always have a good range in stock: https://jsaccessories.co.uk/ Branches in Whitney and Gloucester. The staff in the one near me that says it's Portsmouth, but is actually Waterlooville, are always helpful. We're also have a Helmet City in Chichester, who are good, but I find them a little more expensive, and unless you visit during the week you can have a long wait for attention as it's often busy. I have travelled to Moto legends when I couldn't find a pair of Gloves I liked that also fitted: https://www.motolegends.com/ They were very good considering the lowish value of what I was looking at, but again very busy at the weekend. Motolegends are superb, both in store and on-line/over the phone. They only sell biking kit, not bikes or accessories and tend to only stock the more expensive brands and a fair amount of that is hipster garb but they will take the time to ensure that you're happy with what you're buying and the fit is correct. It's an experience like no other in the bike clothing trade with tea or coffee served whilst you peruse. Stock levels are impressive too. Buying online is also good with free returns/exchanges and a "never knowingly undersold" guarantee, in fact they will beat any competing price (delivered cost) by 10%. They even did this retrospectively for me last year crediting my card with the money. I have bought from them out of loyalty due to the service they provide, can't say that their attitude and approach doesn't work, with me anyway.
+1 for sportsbikeshop, very very easy returns, great prices, will price match. Not sure about store try-ons with Covid so may be better off going down this route, but they do have their new store in Reading depending on where in Wiltshire you are
