Realistic Bhp Gains For Mods Done On Motorcycles

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Glenb, May 17, 2021.

  1. I keep seeing unrealistic power figures on bikes with mods done , what mods give what bhp increase on say 1000cc bike which has 165 bhp at stock

  2. Completely depends..... on all things, type and brand of mod, even year of bike, type of dyno.... can you be more specific

  3. How deep is your pocket ? Gas flow/port sculpting, bigger valves, peakier cams, valve timing, bigger exhaust and bespoke ECU mapping spring to mind. A better exhaust and ECU remap added about 12hp peak to my 1098R, so 6 or 7%. What you gain most is a smoother, more linear power delivery. Andy

  4. Go to A Ducati tuner in the West Midlands and get one of their dyno runs. Sorted.

  5. I know it’s how long is a piece of string really , what prompted me is someone with an Mv Agusta f4 Nero 1000 which stock is 166bhp and they are pretty tuned to start with and the guys saying it’s been dynod at 214 bhp , it even looks like it’s on the stock exhaust to me , what I’m saying is Id guess even a 20 bhp increase would take a lot of mods and effort and cash to achieve

  6. On a modern bike with a restrictive exhaust I would say a good system and proper individual remap would gain 10-15 at the top end with a much better power curve.
My friends 1199 has had a huge amount of blue printing work done to it by JHS and has about 6 bhp up on my 1199, same dyno same day.
But the mid range is fantastic and makes mine look like a 2 stroke.
Seem to remember the bill was 8k+...

  7. As above. Depends on a lot of things.

Generally though it’s marginal gains for huge outlay

there’s also a lot of bs regarding dyno figures and bhp figures in general.

I’m sure my Suzuki has 800bhp at the spark plug

  8. Increase of 30% with a standard exhaust? I expect he dated Liz Hurley too. Whatever you do don't ask him about the size of the biggest fish he caught!

  9. There’s a certain well known Yamaha tuner who’s r1’s mysteriously loose about 40bhp as soon as they’re placed on someone else’s dyno.

I’ve heard that particular dyno was once blessed by Jesus back in the day. It is said to be Factory from Rome.

My mates was allegedly 235bhp (bollocks) and it put out 186 on my friends respected dyno

  10. Half the Dicks who frequent dyno's willy waving their 230bhp machines couldn't ride for toffee anyway.
Most would struggle learning to ride with a 100bhp machine properly.

  11. in my experience the older the bike is, the less the gains will be by small cost tuning.
currently with all the emission and noise control on newer models you can release some HP and improve running reasonably cheaply with clear results (bum dyno)
i thinks its reasonable to expect about a 10bhp increase in power and a general improvement of the low end performance with a simple mapping exercise on a bike like you referenced ( maybe more with a combination of modifications)

  13. Race ECU with ability to map it
    Race CamShafts

  14. Have a look this video, clearly shows before and after gains with proper mapping

You can achieve some of these results by installing PowerCommander on top of OEM ECU, but its just a hack.

  15. Some people could make gains simply by stopping eating all the pies. Instead they tune the arse of a bike to carry their fat arse around 1% fatser (sic).

  16. And what does that have to do with anything being discussed?

  17. Weight Brad. 1/2mv² or kinetic energy. Removing weight would be my priority over hp. The rider is a cheap mod.

  18. I'd rather lose 10kg than gain 10hp.

  19. @Sev - spookily, and connected to my earlier dyno comment…

“Lets take for example a 749R head - porting and flowing that won't net you much for your 800 quid, so hp per pound in real terms is extortionate, but do the same to an old Desmoquattro or desmodue head and it's a different ball park, where your money nets you a bigger return per pound spent.”

My 749R was ported by a Ducati shop in W Midlands prior to me purchasing it…I have a lovely dyno chart that came with the bike showing 138rwbhp ….!! It must be true eh?

  20. I would also add to my previous comment. fitness. I'm 55 and Im not nearly as fit as I could be. By some margin. Im slim, only 11st in my boxers, prob 12 in leathers. But my core strength is poor. I sit in an office in front of a pc all day and im a lazy bastard. I could get more from my bike if I improved my core strength and fitness. ie I could use what I actually have more effectively rather than just being a passenger holding onto a lunatic.

I did make some fitness improvements over lockdown. Mainly due to my shoulders. Ive smashed one up previously and the other has a bit of rsi. So I started doing push ups whilst I wait for my coffee to brew in morning at work. I started small, I did 5 a day. I can now do 50 a day easily. My shoulders have recovered 100% and Ive noticed I can move my 1299 way better. Im now working on my core doing planks and sit ups. But Ive just started. In truth I put an inch (okay 2" ffs, Im in denial sob) on my waist and my vanity has nagged me to do something before i put on more. I appreciate its difficult to remove it once its there and want to pre-empt it. I'm a sucker for a packet of chocolate malted milk.

We all want more, but really what we really need is to be able to use what we have more effectively first.
